The flag stands for “heritage, not hate.” They believe that it honors their ancestors who fought in the Civil War, and that it is a symbol of pride in their distinctive region of the country and its culture. The flag is a symbol of hate and oppression because it was the flag flown by those who fought to preserve the enslavement of millions of black Americans.
