3. What are some of the impediments schools face when trying to ban corporal punishment?
4. In a complete sentence: True or False: The reason why corporal punishment has not been prohibited in all states is because no one on Capitol Hill is willing to try introducing a bill that would ban corporal punishment in all states.
5. How could improving data help lead to the permanent banning of corporal punishment?
Answer:
3 US: Students With Disabilities Face Corporal Punishment at Higher Rates ... ACLU and Human Rights Watch Seek Ban on Physical ... I think they were trying to break his spirit.
4 False School corporal punishment is currently legal in 19 states, and over 160,000 children in these states are subject to corporal punishment in schools each year. Given that the use of school corporal punishment is heavily concentrated in Southern states, and that the federal government has not included corporal punishment in its recent initiatives about improving school discipline, public knowledge of this issue is limited. The aim of this policy report is to fill the gap in knowledge about school corporal punishment by describing the prevalence and geographic dispersion of corporal punishment in U.S. public schools and by assessing the extent to which schools disproportionately apply corporal punishment to children who are Black, to boys, and to children with disabilities. This policy report is the first-ever effort to describe the prevalence of and disparities in the use of school corporal punishment at the school and school-district levels. We end the report by summarizing sources of concern about school corporal punishment, reviewing state policies related to school corporal punishment, and discussing the future of school corporal punishment in state and federal policy.
5 On the other hand, corporal punishment may be considered reasonable when the discipline is age appropriate; is appropriate given the child's developmental level; when the punishment leaves no visible or internal injuries; when the punishment was thought out in advance; when there is no evidence that the parent reacted

The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely1 and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o’clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 26th, but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o’clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner.
The description of the lottery in paragraph 1 is meant to make the reader feel suspicious about the true meaning of the lottery. Therefore option A is the correct option.

Based on information in the article, which best describes the difference between the child labor rates in Nepal and Mongolia?
A.Child labor rates have increased in Mongolia since 1990, but decreased in Nepal since 1990.
B.Child labor rates have increased in Mongolia since 1990, but stayed the same in Nepal since 1990.
C.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but decreased in Mongolia since 1990.
D.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but stayed the same in Mongolia since 1990.
In 2000, there were 127 million children working in Asia. By 2004, that number had fallen to 122 million. Officials are pleased that child labor rates have dropped, but they say the decline isn't happening fast enough.
Those numbers came from a recent report from the International Labor Organization (ILO). The report focused on South Asia, which includes Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other nations. It concluded that despite the decrease in the number of working children ages five to 14, South Asia remains a child labor hot spot.
The report discussed child labor in several nations and identified Nepal as one of the worst offenders. As of 2004, almost 40 percent of Nepalese children aged 10 to 14 were working. Many continue to do strenuous physical labor in mines, quarries, and carpet factories. Still, even in Nepal, child labor rates are declining; they had been near 50 percent in 1990.
The Philippines has improved, but problems remain in some industries. Many Filipino children still work in fireworks production, deep-sea fishing, and mining. The country has a national action plan to change this.
"The [anti-child labor] laws are all there," said Filipino Undersecretary of Labor and Employment Manuel G. Imson. Imson says that the government is working with the police to enforce these laws.
In some cases, child labor has emerged where it was previously nonexistent. There were few or no child laborers in Mongolia until 1990; today, up to 10,000 children there work in gold, coal, and mineral mines. Kh. Ganbaatar, executive director of the Mongolian Employers' Federation, blames the problem on economic changes as well as on natural disasters. Several years ago, winter storms killed millions of livestock. This made it harder for families to maintain their traditional herding way of life. Many of these families were forced to send their children to work.
In fact, child labor often develops because area families cannot make ends meet and need extra income. In other cases, parents want to send their children to school but cannot afford the related fees.
"A large number of working poor means that we have a large number of people who are unable to support children [going] to school," said Panudda Boonpala, senior child labor specialist at the ILO.
In August, government representatives from nearly 40 countries as well as workers' and employers' organizations attended an ILO conference. Topics on their agenda included migration, competitiveness, productivity, and youth employment (child labor). At a session on youth employment, participants watched a video that showed children working at a gold mine in Mongolia.
The ILO says that it will try to end some of the worst forms of child labor within 10 years. Its officials point out that attitudes about working children have changed in Asia. This is contributing to the reduction in child labor rates.
"I think 10 years ago there was lots of denial," Panudda said. Still, she said, nations will not be able to end child labor unless they are willing to put a lot of effort and funding into the fight against it.
Answer: C.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but decreased in Mongolia since 1990.

Read Edward Corsi’s quotation from the book Immigrant Kids by Russell Freedman.
Edward Corsi, who later became United States Commissioner of Immigration, was a ten-year-old Italian immigrant when he sailed into New York harbor in 1907:
Giuseppe and I held tightly to Stepfather’s hands, while Liberta and Helvetia clung to Mother. Passengers all about us were crowding against the rail. Jabbered conversations, sharp cries, laughs and cheers – a steadily rising din filled the air. Mothers and fathers lifted up babies so that they too could see, off to the left, the Statue of Liberty.
How does this quotation add credibility to Freedman’s statement that the immigrants never forgot seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time?
It adds credibility because it comes from a worker on the ship who sailed past the Statue of Liberty.
It adds credibility because it comes from an immigrant who actually shares his memories of seeing the Statue of Liberty.
It adds credibility because it comes from a historian who studied immigrants and the Statue of Liberty.
It adds credibility because it comes from a journalist who researched the Statue of Liberty.

1.List different types of external conflicts in literature; Explain what an internal confluct is.
2. Provide one example of an external conflict and one of an internal conflict we encounter in the story.
Answer:
There are several types of external conflicts in literature, including person vs. person, person vs. society, person vs. nature, and person vs. technology. An internal conflict, on the other hand, is a struggle that takes place within a character's mind or heart. This type of conflict often involves a character's inner turmoil or emotional struggle.
In the story "To kl a Mockingbird," an external conflict arises when Atticus defends Tom Robinson against false accusations of rpe made by Bob Ewell. This person vs. person conflict shows the tension between the two characters and the larger societal issues at play. An internal conflict is also evident in the story, particularly in the character of Scout. She struggles with understanding the rcism and injustice in her community, as well as coming to terms with her own identity and place in the world.
