Through many of the early chapters of Little Women, the March girls make reference to the allegorical Pilgrim’s Progress. Explain how one of the girls, or the family as a whole, relates to the characters and themes in Pilgrim’s Progress. Include details that indicate comparisons that Louisa May Alcott makes between Little Women and Pilgrim’s Progress.
Answer:
This book is prefaced by the novel The Pilgrim's Progress that is a symbol of how to live as a Christian. In this preface it is included the females character of the book, MERCY, no its male character, so it is a sign that this book is a guide for young girls, it is a guide to get the salvation and the self-improvement.
Alcott wants to emphasize that religion is more important that everyday details of life. The four March sisters have to follow saintly feet and have a spiritual journey through their lives, in spite their situation as "little tripping maids".
"Tell them of Mercy; she is one
Who early hath her pilgrimage begun.
Yea, let young damsels learn of her to prize
The world which is to come, and so be wise;
For little tripping maids may follow God
Along the ways which saintly feet have trod."

What are some reasons an author would choose to write his/her story in third person point of view? Write complete sentences.
What are some reasons an author would choose to write his/her story in first-person point of view? Write complete sentences.
Answer:
1.) The primary advantage to writing fiction in the third person (using the pronouns he, she, they, etc.) is it allows the writer to act as an omniscient narrator. Information can be given to the reader about every character and situation, whether or not the individual characters know anything about it.
2.) The biggest advantage of first-person point of view is how deeply it delves into the mind of the narrator. No other point of view is as close. In first-person, the reader gets to see all of the narrator's thoughts, feelings, and knowledge.

Answer:
Explanation:
Answer 1: An author would choose to write his/her story in third person point of view to show you what is going on in different parts. For example, if the story is in third person you can know what is going on when two characters are in completely seperate places.
Answer 2: An author would choose to write his/her story in first person point of view because it allows you to understand what that character is thinking and what they feel without them having to say it out-loud.

What Happens When Fuels Burn?
Most people burn fuel every single day. Fuels are substances that release energy when they burn. They are very important to us because we use the energy from burning fuels to do many things, such as run cars and buses, heat homes, and cook food. For example, gasoline is the fuel used in most car engines. When it burns, the energy it releases makes the car move. To prepare for a long trip, you fill your gas tank with gasoline—but after you drive for a while, the tank is empty and you need to fill it up again. What happened to the gasoline? Where did it go? When we burn something—whether it is a log, a match, or the gasoline in our gas tank—what we are actually doing is causing a chemical reaction. Burning gasoline may not seem like the kinds of chemical reactions that you have seen before. After all, chemical reactions cause substances to change into other substances as the atoms of the reactants rearrange to form the products. When gasoline burns, it doesn’t seem to change into a different substance. Instead, it seems to disappear, leaving you with an empty tank. If burning gasoline actually causes a chemical reaction to happen, then why doesn’t your tank fill up with a different substance? Can a chemical reaction cause something to change into nothing?
Scientists began to wonder about this question back in the 1700s. Around this time, a French scientist named Antoine Lavoisier (an-TWAN la-VWA-see-ay) began studying what happened to the masses of substances before and after a chemical reaction. Mass is a measure of how much matter makes up an object. First, Lavoisier measured the mass of two reactants before mixing them to cause a chemical reaction. After the reaction had happened, he measured the mass of the products. Every time, Lavoisier found that the reactants and the products had the same mass! Through these experiments, Lavoisier helped come up with the idea we now call the Law of Conservation of Matter: matter cannot be created or destroyed during chemical reactions. This is because the atoms that make up all matter cannot be created or destroyed during chemical reactions. This law tells us that all of the atoms that go into a chemical reaction must come out in the form of one substance or another. Chemical reactions cause atoms to rearrange into new and different groups, but the atoms themselves never stop existing, and new atoms never appear out of nowhere. So what does the Law of Conservation of Matter have to do with burning gasoline? It means that even though your gas tank is empty, the atoms that formed the gasoline must still exist somewhere in some form. The only reason that these atoms seem to disappear is because the substances that form when gasoline burns are invisible gases. You can’t see them, but they are there, and sometimes that isn’t a good thing.
Carbon-Containing Fuels
Gasoline is just one of many fuels that contain carbon. One of the most common fuels in use today is ethanol, a substance made up of groups of two carbon atoms, six hydrogen atoms, and one oxygen atom. Ethanol is made from corn and used as a substitute for gasoline. Like gasoline, ethanol is a colorless liquid at room temperature. When you burn anything, including ethanol, you are mixing it with oxygen. However, just having oxygen around isn’t enough to make something burn; this reaction only happens at a high temperature. Burning reactions release energy in the forms of heat and light, but these chemical reactions result in more than just energy. See the diagram below to learn more. The chemical reaction that happens when ethanol and oxygen mix produces two substances: carbon dioxide and water in the gas phase. Since both of these are invisible, colorless gases, it seems like nothing is left of the liquid that was in your gas tank. However, the atoms of the reactants haven’t disappeared at all—they’ve only rearranged to form the products. The carbon dioxide and water produced by this chemical reaction enter the atmosphere whenever we burn ethanol or other carbon-containing fuels. In the recent past, humans have increased the amount of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere by burning such fuels, resulting in widespread changes to Earth’s climate. In response to these effects, scientists are working to find fuels that can release energy without producing carbon dioxide.
Answer: When fuels burn, a chemical reaction takes place in which energy is released in the forms of heat and light. The Law of Conservation of Matter states that matter cannot be created or destroyed during chemical reactions, meaning all the atoms from the reactants must come out in the form of one substance or another. Most common fuels, including gasoline and ethanol, are carbon-containing fuels and when they burn, they produce carbon dioxide and water in the gas phase which enters the atmosphere. This increased production of carbon dioxide by humans has caused widespread changes to Earth's climate, leading scientists to search for fuels that release energy without producing carbon dioxide.

Anatomy of an Ant
Marilyn Wells
An interesting fact about an ant’s anatomy is that the insect has two stomachs in its back section. One of the stomachs is called a crop, and the other is called a gaster. The crop supplies food for the community, while the gaster is the ant’s personal stomach.
The community stomach works this way. The food the ant eats dissolves into a liquid that is stored in the crop. When a fellow ant from the community is hungry, it can stroke the food-gathering ant’s head with its antennae. Then, each ant opens its mouth so that the liquid food can pass from the sharing ant to the hungry ant.
The ant’s second stomach, the gaster, is smaller than the crop. The gaster has two important jobs to do. First, it’s the ant’s personal stomach. When the ant is hungry, the gaster receives food from the crop. It digests the food for its own nourishment. In addition to digesting food for the ant, the gaster contains poison glands. Some ants have stingers at the end of the gaster that eject the poison into enemies. Ants without stingers can still squirt the poison through a tiny opening at the rear of the gaster.
An ant’s two stomachs, the crop and the gaster, help in the survival of the individual ant and its entire community.
Question
Acidopore
From Wikipedia
The acidopore is a component of ant anatomy; a round orifice located on the abdomen encircled by hairs which typifies the subfamily Formicine. The conical structure connects to the posterior end of an ant’s gaster where formic acid and other hydrocarbons formed, collectively comprising the venom. This structure is unique to, but not present in all members of the ant subfamily Formicine. It is termed an acidopore because it is the pore, or hole, from which formic acid is sprayed.
How is the purpose of both articles similar?
A. Both articles explain the eyesight of ants.
B. Both articles explain the antennae of ants.
C. Both articles explain the reproductive system of ants.
D. Both articles explain the abdominal area of ants.

While some may look at this Harry Potter branded gum and think that it has few uses, the true potential for this gum show just how many uses it has. While most people might chew gum to freshen their breath, the gum can be chewed to help combat feelings of hunger and boredom, which are things that plague many. After chewing gum such as this, many people would opt to throw it out, but I say that you can still use your chewed Harry Potter gum! While people might find already chewed gum to be without use, you can use it to help keep things stuck to your walls! That is to say that it can be used as an adhesive to put posters up, which makes it cost effective and much more useful than the pushpins that you might use instead. So rather than waste your money on those bland and boring alternatives, spend less to get much more from this Harry Potter gum!

And The Truth Shall Make You Free: A Speech On The Principles Of Social Freedom
By Victoria C. Woodhull
Our government is based upon this proposition: All men and women are born free and equal and entitled to certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What we ask is simply that the government follow the spirit of this proposition. Nothing more, nothing less. If that proposition means anything, it means just what it says, without limitation. It means that every person is of equal right as an individual. Every person is free as an individual, and he or she is entitled to pursue happiness however he or she chooses. Now this is absolutely true of all men and all women. But just here some people stop and tell us that everybody must not pursue happiness in his or her own way. They say that to do so absolutely would be to have no protection against the action of an individual. These well-meaning people only see half of what is involved in the proposition. They look at a single individual and lose sight of all others. They do not think about how every other individual beside the one in question is equally due the same freedom. They do not consider how each is free within the area of his or her individual sphere. They do not recognize the fact that the moment one person gets out of his sphere and into the sphere of another, that other must protect him or herself against such an invasion of rights. To all such persons we assert: it is freedom and not despotism which we advocate, and we will demand that individuals be restricted to their freedom if it violates that of others.
If life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are inalienable rights in the individual, and government is based upon that inalienability, then it must follow that the functions of that government are to guard and protect the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, to the end that every person may have the most perfect exercise of them. And the most perfect exercise of such rights is only attained when every individual is not only fully protected in his rights, but also strictly restrained to the exercise of them within his own sphere, and prevented from proceeding beyond its limits, so as to encroach upon the sphere of another.
From these generalizations, certain specifications can be deduced, by which, all questions of rights must be determined:
1. Every living person has certain rights of which no law can rightfully deprive him.
2. Groups of persons form communities, who form governments to secure regularity and order.
3. Order and harmony can alone be secured in a community where every individual is fully protected in the exercise of all individual rights.
4. Any government which enacts laws to deprive individuals of the free exercise of their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is despotic. Therefore, such laws are not binding upon the people who protest against them, whether they be a majority or a minority.
5. When every individual is secure in the exercise of all his rights, then everyone is also secure from the interference of all other parties.
question:
Based on the passage, what is the author's attitude toward government?
A.
She thinks it is important as long as it stays within its sphere.
B.
She thinks it is a good thing as long as it protects individual rights.
C.
She thinks it is unimportant because individuals can govern themselves.
D.
She thinks it is a bad thing because it cannot protect individual rights.
Answer:
B. She thinks it is a good thing as long as it protects individual rights.
Explanation:
The author never spoke badly about the government. She seems fairly civil with it. The author speaks a lot about rights and everyone being equal. She thinks individual rights are very important.

What is "One Thousand Miles"?The lead song for American pop artist Vanessa Carlton is "A Thousand Miles," which was originally named "Interlude." The track, which served as the album's lead single, was created by Curtis Schweitzer and Ron Fair (2002).
It was first made available to US radio in February 2002, and it quickly became Carlton's biggest hit in the country. It was also her only single to peak at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also a commercial hit all over the world, peaking at number one in Australia, number five in Ireland, and number ten in the UK, France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
There was a small argument between Carlton and Fair over the title of the song, with Fair apparently "adamant" about changing it. Vanessa Carlton is a phenomenal talent, but Fair noted that she's also rather obstinate.

Read this excerpt from The American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793.
Most doctors had predicted the fever would end when the cold weather returned. Almost all epidemics followed the same pattern, striking during warm weather, disappearing with the first hard frost. Daniel Defoe, in recording the end of the Black Death that visited London in 1665, wrote that "the winter weather came on apace [and] most of those that had fallen sick recovered, and the health of the city began to return."
Which excerpt from Fever 1793 connects to the historical account detailed in the excerpt?
Guns were fired on the street corners, and a cannon blasted in the public square to purify the air.
"The almshouse is closed. They want to protect their residents from the disease. So the fever victims lie on the floor of Rickett’s with little water and no care."
"Jefferson still comes into town every morning, though everyone says he’ll soon quit and retire to his farm at Monticello," said Mr. Carris.
I silently counted on my fingers: twenty-eight days until the end of September, then on into October until the first frost. Frost always killed fever. Mr. Carris said it drained the poison from the air.

Answer: Under Travis's leadership, the United Farm Workers (UFW) used union contracts to improve working conditions for farm workers. The first union contracts signed by the UFW addressed a range of issues, including rest periods, toilets in the fields, clean drinking water, hand washing facilities, and the banning of discrimination and sexual harassment of women workers. These contracts also required protective clothing against exposure to pesticides and prohibited the use of dangerous pesticides, such as DDT, while workers were in the field. The UFW's efforts to improve working conditions for farm workers through union contracts came years before the US Environmental Protection Agency took action to regulate the use of pesticides. The specific evidence in the text shows that the UFW, under Travis's leadership, was dedicated to making the lives of farm workers safer and more dignified.
