FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 1 [100 Marks) THE RISKS OF RIOTS AND CIVIL UNREST From January 2013 to 9 February 2014. South Africa recorded a staggering 430 service delivery protests - an average of 33 per month or one per day, according to the Institute for Security Studies. Gauteng leads by a massive margin in terms of violent protests, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. At least 10 people have died during such protects, and both government and private property have been seriously damaged with protesters setting fire to government buildings, private properties, homes of government officials and vehicles caught in the fray. Standard insurance policies available through private sector insurers do not provide cover for damage to assets as a result of these types of events as they are precluded from underwriting these risks. Cover is available in South Africa through the state-owned insurer - Sasria SOC Limited. Sasria, which was originally founded to provide cover for politically motivated riots, covers damage caused by riot (both political and non-political), public disorder, including labour disturbances, civil unrest, strikes and lockouts. It is the only organisation in South Africa authorised to provide insurance cover for losses caused as a result of these types of events. According to Sasria's 2013 annual report, its claims frequency increased by 91% driven primarily by labour strikes, while claims severity increased by 135% compared with 2012. Sasria's importance seems clearer than ever as the uncertainties in the socio-economic environment mean that 'special risks' as defined in Sasria's terms of reference, have become a permanent part of the risk management landscape as the challenges of industrial action, workplace disruption, social unrest and service delivery protests proliferate. Both businesses and consumers need to consult with their brokers and insurers to ascertain whether their insurance coverage has been extended to cover Sasria perils. As a matter of course, clients should be offered this type of cover when discussing their business personal insurance requirements as this presents a significant risk to both consumers and business owners who could find themselves severely out of pocket if their assets were damaged during a violent strike. Given the status quo of the last 12-18 months, it's an essential if not non-negotiable cover on any insurance policy. This is especially important for people who own property, live, work or commute in areas that have a high propensity for protest and strike action. Sasria may not decline your request for cover. Sasria rates are regulated and for businesses available to the premiums. However, cover provided by Sasria is subject to a maximum limit for any one loss and any one insurance period per client to R1,500 million. The Sasria cover in terms of Business Interruption is limited to fixed expenses or standing charges and net profit, but not for the traditional contingent business interruption covers such as losses following damage to premises of customers and suppliers, and to the supply of public utilities. These covers can be purchased from the private sector to ensure the client enjoys similar cover to that provided for losses arising from non-Sasria perils. For consumers, the cost of cover is minimal in relation to that of replacing an expensive asset. Experience has shown that strikes and protest action in South Africa are becoming increasingly violent and it is therefore crucial to ensure that the insurance cover is correctly structured so that clients do not suffer unnecessarily as a result of damage to their property. Source: Graeme Fuller, https://cover.co.za/the-risk-of-riots/ Answer ALL the questions in this section. Question 1 (25 Marks) In light of the case study provided, justify the importance of Sasria SOC Ltd to the insurance industry and the South African economy Question 2 (25 Marks) Experience has shown that strikes and protest action in South Africa are becoming increasingly violent and have resulted in significant disruptions to enterprise-wide risks. Considering this, advise South African businesses on how they should manage enterprise risks Question 3 (25 Marks) With refence to South African businesses evaluate the measures that they can consider in financing the extent of damages and costs caused by civil unrest and riots. Your response should refer to relevant examples and illustrations.

Answers

Answer 1

The importance of Sasria SOC Ltd to the insurance industry and the South African economy lies in its unique coverage for losses caused by politically and non-politically motivated riots, public disorder, civil unrest, strikes etc.

Why is Sasria SOC Ltd important to the insurance and S.A. economy?

Sasria SOC Ltd plays a vital role in the insurance industry and the South African economy by providing insurance coverage for risks that are not covered by standard insurance policies. As demonstrated by the high number of service delivery protests and violent strikes in South Africa, there is a significant need for coverage against damage to assets resulting from these events.

The private sector insurers are precluded from underwriting these risks, making Sasria the only authorized organization to provide such coverage. Sasria's coverage helps protect businesses and consumers from severe financial losses due to property damage during violent strikes and protests. Without Sasria, individuals and businesses could find themselves severely out of pocket if their assets were damaged during these events.

The right alternative is 1. Lost revenue is represented by areas C and E while gained revenue is represented by area A.

In economics, the phrase "quantity demanded" describes the total quantity of an item or service that consumers demand over a defined period of time. A market's level of equilibrium is determined by the cost of a good or service. The demand curve, or simply the demand, is the relationship that exists between the amount demanded and the price. The elasticity of demand measures how much the cost of the quantity demanded varies. A change in the specific quantity of a product that consumers are willing and able to purchase is referred to as a shift in the quantity requested. A variation in pricing resulted in this change in the required amount.

The item's price has an impact on the required amount. Demand will decrease as the price rises. As the price declines, demand will increase. There is a negative relationship between price and demand.

3M stock started the year at $147, and by the end of the year
had increased to $166. 3M also paid 5 in dividends during the year.
What was the percent return for 3M?

Answers

The percent return for 3M stock is approximately 16.33%.

To calculate the percent return for 3M stock, we need to consider both the change in stock price and the dividends paid.

The initial stock price of 3M was $147, and by the end of the year, it had increased to $166. This represents a price increase of $166 - $147 = $19 per share. In addition, 3M paid $5 in dividends during the year.

To calculate the percent return, we can use the formula:

Percent Return = ((Change in Price + Dividends) / Initial Price) * 100

In this case, the change in price is $19, and the dividends paid is $5. The initial price is $147.

Using the formula:

Percent Return = (($19 + $5) / $147) * 100

Percent Return = ($24 / $147) * 100

Percent Return ≈ 16.33%

Therefore, the percent return for 3M stock is approximately 16.33%.

A coupon bond that pays semiannual interest is reported in the Wall Street Journal as having an ask price of 122% of its $1,000 par value. If the last interest payment was made 3 months ago and the coupon rate is 6.50%, the invoice price of the bond will be _________.

Answers

The invoice price of a semiannual coupon bond with an asking price of 122% of its $1,000 par value, a last interest payment made 3 months ago, and a coupon rate of 6.50% is $1,268.16.

The invoice price of a bond is the price that the buyer pays to the seller, including any accrued interest. To calculate the invoice price of a semiannual coupon bond, we need to add the accrued interest to the asking price. The coupon rate of the bond is 6.50%, which means that the bond pays $32.50 in interest every six months ($1,000 x 6.50% / 2). The last interest payment was made 3 months ago, which means that the accrued interest is $16.25 ($32.50 x 3 / 6).

The asking price of the bond is 122% of its $1,000 par value, which is $1,220 ($1,000 x 122%). Adding the accrued interest of $16.25, we get an invoice price of $1,236.25. Therefore, the invoice price of the semiannual coupon.

A new order has come in and these two products has to be manufactured in 8 hrs. The two main ingredients in these paints are pigments and resins. The Premium brand requires 5mg of pigments and 0.2mg of resins in each can of paint. The Ultra Hide brand requires 4mg of pigments and 0.1 mg of resins in each can of paint. These formulations stipulate that pigments must be no more than 100mg and resins must be no less than 3mg per can of paint. GlowWell requires 12 minutes to manufacture a can of Premium Plus and 48 minutes for a can of Ultra Hide. The company needs to know the combination of paints to maximise its revenue. GlowWell will sell a can of Premium Plus for $10 and a can of Ultra Hide for $15. a) Use X1 and X2 to define the variables indicating which variable is X1 and X2 b) Derive GlowWell's Objective Function in terms of X1 and X2 c) What are the Contraints under which GlowWell must operate d) Graphically illustrate the Feasible Region

Answers

a) Let's define the variables:

X1 = Number of cans of Premium Plus paint

X2 = Number of cans of Ultra Hide paint

b) The objective function represents GlowWell's revenue, which can be calculated by multiplying the number of cans of each type of paint by their respective selling prices. The objective function is:

Revenue = 10X1 + 15X2

c) The constraints under which GlowWell must operate are:

Pigment constraint: The total amount of pigments used in both types of paint must be less than or equal to 100mg.

5X1 + 4X2 ≤ 100

Resin constraint: The total amount of resins used in both types of paint must be greater than or equal to 3mg.

0.2X1 + 0.1X2 ≥ 3

Time constraint: The total manufacturing time for both types of paint must not exceed 8 hours (480 minutes).

12X1 + 48X2 ≤ 480

Non-negativity constraint: The number of cans cannot be negative.

X1 ≥ 0

X2 ≥ 0

d) To graphically illustrate the feasible region, you can plot the constraints on a graph. Here's a visualization of the feasible region:

                 |                   5X1 + 4X2 = 100

                 |             /

                 |        /

      0.2X1 + 0.1X2 = 3

                 |

                 |

                 |

                 |

                 |

The line 5X1 + 4X2 = 100 represents the pigment constraint, and the line 0.2X1 + 0.1X2 = 3 represents the resin constraint. The feasible region is the shaded area that satisfies all the constraints. The non-negativity constraint restricts the region to the positive quadrant of the graph.

By optimizing the objective function (Revenue = 10X1 + 15X2) within the feasible region, GlowWell can determine the combination of paints (X1 and X2 values) that maximizes its revenue.

Note: The graph above is just a rough representation and not drawn to scale. It's recommended to create a more accurate graph using appropriate scales and units to analyze the feasible region and make optimal decisions.

a firm that produces running shoes is currently manufacturing a line of waterproof shoes at a marginal cost of $50 per pair. during the winter months, they were able to charge a price of $90 per pair. now that it is summer, the demand has fallen, and they are only able to charge $60 per pair. assuming the shoe store is a profit-maximizing firm, which of the following is true? a.) the firm should stop producing the shoes since their profit margin is smaller than before. b.) the firm should continue to produce the shoes since the marginal revenue is still greater than the marginal cost. c.) the firm should shut down this production line since it is driving down its overall profitability. d.) the firm should continue to produce the shoes even if the price fell a lot further since that's the only way to maximize revenue.

Answers

b. The firm should continue to produce the shoes since the marginal revenue is still greater than the marginal cost.

Marginal revenue can be described as an economic and financial calculation that calculates how much revenue a firm earns in revenue for each additional unit sold.

Since the firm that produces the running shoes is still able to charge $60 per pair in summer and the marginal cost is $50 per pair, this means that the marginal revenue is still $10 greater than its marginal cost therefore instead of stopping the shoe production the firm should continue to produce it.

According to economic theory, the firm should increase output as long as marginal revenue exceeds marginal cost, and should only reduce it in the case of marginal revenue being less than the marginal cost.

Suggest an unbiased estimator that could be used to estimate the population proportion of individuals with a ‘degree or equivalent’. Use the sample data in order to provide an estimate. Briefly comment on your choice of estimator and on your estimate

Answers

One unbiased estimator that could be used to estimate the population proportion of individuals with a 'degree or equivalent' is the sample proportion.

This estimator is unbiased because it is based on the random sampling of individuals from the population, which ensures that the sample is representative of the population.

To provide an estimate, we would need sample data that includes the number of individuals in the sample who have a 'degree or equivalent' and the total number of individuals in the sample.

For example, if we had a sample of 500 individuals and 200 of them had a 'degree or equivalent', then the sample proportion would be 0.4 (or 40%).

It is important to note that the sample proportion is only an estimate and there is always some degree of uncertainty associated with it.

To determine the level of precision and confidence in the estimate, we would need to calculate the margin of error and construct a confidence interval.

ld to maturity of a five-year, $5,000 bond with a 4.2% coupon rate and semiannual coupons if this bond is currently trading for a price of $4,753? A. 5.34% B. 6.41% C. 7.48% D. 2.67%

Answers

The estimated YTM for the bond is 6.41%. The correct answer choice is B. 6.41%.

The estimated YTM for the bond is 6.41%. The correct answer choice is B. 6.41%. To calculate the yield to maturity (YTM) of a bond, we need to find the discount rate that equates the present value of all future cash flows (coupon payments and face value) with the current market price of the bond.

In this case, the bond has a 4.2% coupon rate and semiannual coupons.

The formula to calculate YTM involves solving the equation for the discount rate using trial and error or using financial calculators/software. However, we can estimate the YTM by making some assumptions and approximations.

Assuming a constant discount rate for each semiannual period, we can estimate the YTM as follows:

1. Calculate the total future cash flows:

  - Coupons: The bond has a $5,000 face value and a 4.2% coupon rate, paid semiannually. Therefore, the annual coupon payment is (0.042 * $5,000) = $210, and the semiannual coupon payment is $210 / 2 = $105. Over five years, there are ten semiannual coupon payments, so the total coupon payments amount to 10 * $105 = $1,050.

  - Face Value: The face value of the bond is $5,000.

2. Calculate the present value of the future cash flows:

  - Market Price: The bond is currently trading for $4,753.

3. Estimate the YTM using approximations:

By plugging in different values for the YTM and solving for the present value, we find that a YTM of approximately 6.41% results in a present value closest to $4,753.

Therefore, the estimated YTM for the bond is 6.41%. The correct answer choice is B. 6.41%.

If the demand function for math self-help videos is given by 65−0.6x, and the total cost function to manufacture the videos is given by 6x+39, evaluate the marginal profit function at x=20.
Marginal Profit = This means that if production and sales increase by one unit, then total profit will
1)decrease
2)increase by approximately ___ dollars.

Answers

The marginal profit at x = 20 is 35 dollars. This means that if production and sales increase by one unit (from 20 to 21), the total profit will increase by approximately 35 dollars. It indicates that each additional unit sold at this level contributes $35 to the overall profit.

To evaluate the marginal profit function at x = 20, we need to calculate the derivative of the profit function with respect to x. The profit function is given by the difference between total revenue and total cost.

Total revenue is calculated by multiplying the demand function by x: TR(x) = (65 - 0.6x) * x.

Total cost is given by the cost function: TC(x) = 6x + 39.

The profit function is obtained by subtracting total cost from total revenue:

P(x) = TR(x) - TC(x) = (65 - 0.6x) * x - (6x + 39).

To find the marginal profit, we differentiate the profit function with respect to x:

P'(x) = dP(x)/dx = (65 - 0.6x) - 0.6x - 6.

Simplifying, we have:

P'(x) = -1.2x + 59.

Now, we can evaluate the marginal profit at x = 20:

P'(20) = -1.2(20) + 59

= -24 + 59

= 35.

The marginal profit at x = 20 is 35 dollars. This means that if production and sales increase by one unit (from 20 to 21), the total profit will increase by approximately 35 dollars. It indicates that each additional unit sold at this level contributes $35 to the overall profit.
