WHY DID HARRIS THINK RHE MAP OF THE MAZE WAS A JOKE ??

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Harris asked me if I’d ever been in the maze at Hampton Court. He said he went in once to show somebody else the way. He had studied it up in a map, and it was so simple that it seemed foolish – hardly worth the twopence charged for admission. Harris said he thought that map must have been got up as a practical joke, because it wasn’t a bit like the real thing, and only misleading. It was a country cousin that Harris took in.

The Dark Game and The Code Book

Answers

Answer: The Dark Game: Espionage on the Electronic Frontier and The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography are two books that present similar ideas about the world of cryptography and espionage. Despite the similarities, they present their ideas in very different ways.

The Dark Game is a non-fiction book that explores the use of cryptography and espionage in the world of computers and the internet. The author, Paul Roberts, presents the history of cryptography and its evolution into the digital age. He also provides an in-depth analysis of various spy agencies and their methods of collecting and exchanging information, both domestically and internationally.

On the other hand, The Code Book is a more historical and scientific look at the subject of cryptography. The author, Simon Singh, presents the history of cryptography from ancient civilizations to the modern day. He provides a comprehensive look at the mathematics and science behind various encryption techniques, from simple substitution ciphers to complex algorithms. Singh also explores the impact of cryptography on wars and political events throughout history.

One of the key differences between the two books is the level of technical detail. The Dark Game focuses more on the practical applications of cryptography and its use in espionage, whereas The Code Book provides a deeper look at the science and mathematics behind the techniques. The Dark Game is geared towards a general audience and provides a more accessible look at the world of cryptography, while The Code Book is more technical and requires a background in mathematics to fully understand.

Another difference is the scope of the books. The Dark Game focuses primarily on the use of cryptography and espionage in the digital age, while The Code Book covers the entire history of cryptography and its impact on the world. The Dark Game provides a more current and up-to-date look at the subject, while The Code Book provides a broader and more historical perspective.

In conclusion, both The Dark Game and The Code Book provide unique and insightful looks at the world of cryptography and espionage. While they share similarities, they present their ideas in very different ways. The Dark Game is a practical and accessible look at the subject, while The Code Book provides a more scientific and historical perspective.

Answers

Music did not represent enjoyment, but rather the struggle to survive the slavery system (hard labor, whipping, etc.) and the loss of loved ones. Because Northup has given up hope of ever returning to his former life, his fiddle—the only thing that connects him to it—becomes a bitter reminder rather than a solace.

While music is used in "Twelve Years of Enslavement" to enhance the setting and evoke feelings, it also plays a significant part in illustrating the effects of slavery. The way Solomon Northup and his fiddle are portrayed throughout the film demonstrates how his fortitude and spirit as a free man crumble when he experiences degradation and brutality while a slave. Solomon Northup was a free man who only played the fiddle for fun and money prior to his kidnapping. His artistic abilities, however, were seen in a new light when he was thrust into a world of slavery. Solomon started playing the fiddle at his masters' orders, therefore revealing his musical prowess to them would have put his autonomous worldview in jeopardy.

heroism tends to be defined in masculine terms in both beowulf and sir gawain and the green knight. what does it mean to be a hero in both stories? what role is left for women in the respective societies? do the religious elements referenced in the stories contribute to our understanding of heroism in the stories.

Answers

Answer:

In both Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, heroism is defined in terms of physical strength, courage, and the ability to defeat enemies. The heroes in these stories are typically men who go on quests and engage in battles to defend their people and gain honor and glory.

In Beowulf, the role for women is limited to that of supportive figures, such as the queen who mourns Beowulf's death. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the role for women is also limited, with the main female character, Lady Bertilak, serving as a temptress who tests Sir Gawain's chivalry.

The religious elements in both stories do contribute to our understanding of heroism. In Beowulf, the hero's ultimate victory over the dragon is seen as a triumph of good over evil, and is attributed to the intervention of the Christian God. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the hero's quest is seen as a test of his moral character, and his failure to live up to the chivalric code is presented as a failure in his Christian faith.

How does Friar Lawrence use poetic devices and figurative language to demonstrate the beauty and danger of Mother Nature? How does this mirror Romeo and Juliet’s world?

Answers

In Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet," Friar Lawrence uses poetic devices and figurative language to demonstrate the beauty and danger of Mother Nature. Through his words, he reflects the themes of the play and the characters' world.

How to explain the literary work

For example, in Act 2, Scene 3, Friar Lawrence speaks of the medicinal properties of plants, comparing their ability to both heal and harm to the power of love:

"Within the infant rind of this small flower,

Poison hath residence and medicine power.

For this, being smelt, with that part cheers each part;

Being tasted, stays all senses with the heart."

Here, Friar Lawrence employs the poetic device of metaphor to describe the contradictory nature of love and nature. Just as a flower can have both healing and harmful properties, love can bring both joy and pain. This mirrors the world of Romeo and Juliet, where love is both beautiful and dangerous, bringing the lovers together but also leading to their tragic end.

1. Although natural erosion us constantly changing Earth's surface, how do human activites worsen the situation and cause much concern?

2. Discuss how methods of preventing soil erosion help aid in soil conservation.

( kindly use 3 sentences )

Answers

Answer:

1. Although natural erosion is a constant process that shapes and changes the Earth's surface over time, human activities have significantly worsened the situation and caused much concern. This is because human activities have increased the rate and severity of erosion, leading to the loss of topsoil, decreased soil fertility, and increased sedimentation in water bodies, among other environmental problems. Some of the human activities that contribute to erosion include deforestation, overgrazing, mining, construction activities, and improper agricultural practices.

Deforestation, for instance, leads to increased runoff, soil compaction, and loss of vegetation cover, which increases erosion rates. Overgrazing by livestock, on the other hand, leads to soil compaction and removal of vegetation, which results in increased soil erosion. Mining activities often lead to the disturbance of the soil structure, leading to soil instability and increased erosion rates. Construction activities, such as road building and urbanization, often involve the removal of vegetation cover and soil disturbance, leading to increased erosion rates. Improper agricultural practices such as tillage, overuse of chemical fertilizers, and poor crop rotation can also contribute to soil erosion.

Methods of preventing soil erosion help aid in soil conservation by reducing the rate and severity of erosion, preserving soil fertility, and protecting the environment. Some of the common methods of preventing soil erosion include:

a) Contour farming - this involves planting crops across the slope rather than up and down the slope, which reduces runoff and slows down erosion.

b) Terracing - this involves constructing a series of flat areas on a slope, which reduces the gradient and slows down the runoff.

c) Conservation tillage - this involves reducing the amount of soil disturbance during planting and harvesting, which helps to preserve soil structure and reduce erosion.

d) Cover cropping - this involves planting a cover crop, such as grass or legumes, during fallow periods to protect the soil and increase its fertility.

e) Strip cropping - this involves planting crops in alternating strips or rows, which reduces erosion and increases biodiversity.

f) Reforestation - this involves planting trees and other vegetation cover, which helps to reduce erosion rates and protect the soil.

In summary, preventing soil erosion is critical for soil conservation as it helps to reduce soil degradation, preserve soil fertility, and protect the environment. Various methods can be used to prevent soil erosion, depending on the specific land use and management practices.

The air would be cool and there would be a constant breeze flowing through the grassy hills that would lead up to the beach. The beach would be wide and vast. It would continue past what my eyes would be able to see. And the ocean would be clear. I would be able to see the fish as they swam past reefs and rocks and other creatures of all sorts.

Upon continuation of that thought, there would be no one else there except me. Unless, of course, I wanted people there. But my mind would be a rural place, were outsiders would not be welcome. It would just be me, and my house on my beach, unless I decided to give them the directions there. My house would be beautiful, able to withstand any weather that would be possible. Hurricanes of any size and any type. My house would be whatever color I want, depending on the day or how I'm feeling. I wouldn't even have to paint it. It would just change effortlessly, like my emotions.

Nevertheless, as beautiful as my mind sounds, that doesn't mean that the place couldn't change. Hurricanes could show up, and while my house would be fine, the area surrounding it wouldn't. Loud noise and crazy thoughts might swarm my mind which would look like tropical storms and fierce winds. Any surrounding animals or natural life would be temporarily affected, maybe even ruined. Which is why it is a good idea to keep my place distant, far away from any people, or any storms. My beach would be kept pristine and beautiful, with it in even better condition than my house. This is called "child labor". It is when children must work hours, standing in the same place, working extremely hard, and even getting whipped just to come home with about fifty cents? You may not realize this but, the chocolate you eat may be from child labor. These children work hard, and they deserve better. They must spend their childhood working instead of getting an education at schools. Most of the times their families are extremely poor and to survive their children need to work. It may not seem so bad but, its terribly bad. Some children work in factories. The conditions are very poor. These children are just about suffering because how unfair this is. The adults are getting paid more than the children and they can do the exact same thing. One of the worst parts is they must do it every day. It exists in many parts of the world too. Especially west Africa. In the United States, we are very fortunate. We must find a way to put an end to child labor. Could you ever imagine having to do this?In United States, in the 1800s, children had to work in factories. Children with poor families had to work instead of going to school. The children have to work so hard for so long that your fingers would bleed. The air is filled with smoke and dust. Children had to stand in the same spot for 12 hours and screw caps into bottles while making everything goes smoothly. Its quite cold, and the bottle caps will start to hurt your hands. You also would have to stand in a puddle with holes in your shoes. Also, you must crawl into a giant machine when it brakes. If you complain, you can get whipped. Child labor is when young children work in places that are unsafe and are paid less than adults. Businesses use this to find workers with lots of energy and quick fingers without paying them much. This was legal for hundreds of years, but now its illegal to let young children work like this until theyre older. After working your fingers are hurt and sore and you cant feel your feet. Home isnt much more comfortable than work. Home is so close that you can still taste the smoke in the air. The person who owns the factory also owns your home. It may seem nice of your boss to build you a small home to live in but, he isnt doing it for you. The homes are cold, dusty and dirty. You also live with other families in the same building. You also have to pay rent to your boss. You have to sleep in the same room as the rest of your family too. Minimum wage is lowest amount of money your boss can legally pay you but, it wasnt a law until years after factories did this. If you were a child in the industrial revolution, you could have worked eighteen hours a day with a very hard job. Thankfully, now its illegal. (Information in this paragraph was from the article: The life of a U.S Industrial Worker) However, in some places this isnt the case. In west Africa about 300,00 children have to work in farms as slaves or get paid extremely little. Just about fifty cents. Just like a factory, the environment is very unsafe. These children must work all day in order to support their families. Sadly, child labor still continues however, we have eliminated a huge amount of it with laws to protect children from child labor and working so much. In west Africa, a large number of children have to do this, some are even working as slaves. Children must handle sharp and dangerous objects while working in the farms. You may wonder what these children are making, they are making chocolate. It may not seem so bad but its very dangerous. The air is filled with pesticides to stop bugs from eating the cacao beans. Children must breathe that in. When children dont work hard enough or properly, they get whipped. Slave owners would do this to their slaves, so they work harder and faster to satisfy their masters. Their jobs are very tiring so they would be exhausted after working for so long.
