Answer 1

Answer:

Henry David Thoreau is known for living in the woods on the shore of Walden Pond, in self-sufficient isolation. Less known, however, is that a year before building his cabin in Concord, Massachusetts, the famous American author and environmentalist accidentally started a forest fire that nearly burned the Concord woods to the ground.Seven years after graduating from Harvard, Henry David Thoreau was drifting through life. Having failed to support himself as a writer, the 26-year-old had bounced from job to job, working as a tutor, a teacher and even as a handyman for poet and fellow Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 1844, he was working at his father’s pencil-making business.

That year, Thoreau spent the last day of April fishing in his hometown of Concord with his friend Edward Sherman Hoar. After weeks of abnormally dry weather, the Sudbury River was shallower than normal, which eased the task of finding a catch. By mid-morning, the pair had already harvested a bounty of fish, and went ashore to cook a chowder. Using matches borrowed from a shoemaker who lived along the river, the friends lit a fire in a tree stump.

Explanation:

Thoreau had kindled campfires numerous times without incident, but this time strong spring winds whipped the flames, and cascading sparks set ablaze the long, wiry grasses around the stump. Thoreau and Hoar furiously stomped the burning grass and beat the fire with a board they hauled from the boat.

Since junior high teachers are off helping out with the revolution, classes are cancelled.

Most students would celebrate, but Ji-li isn't interested; she wants to be in school and learn.

Besides, it's boring not going to school. There's nothing to do.

One day, she sees Aunt Xi-wen trip and fall. In the scuffle, Ji-li's cousin Shan-shan (a.k.a. Aunt Xi-wen's son) just passes by his mom without helping her.

Ji-li is shocked. That's no way to treat your mom. That's when Ji-li remembers that Shan-shan wrote a da-zi-bao against his mom. Ouch.

Before she can react, she wonders whether she should help her aunt—she doesn't want to be labeled a counterrevolutionary.

Luckily, Old Mrs. Wang gets to her aunt first and helps her up.

Later, An Yi and Ji-li see people chanting in the street. They are standing up to Du Hai's mom and calling her out for some bad stuff she did.

We don't get all the details, but An Yi breathes a huge sigh of relief; she thought it might be people against her mom (since she's a schoolteacher). Phew.

A couple days later, Ji-yun cries about some kids stealing her backpack at school. They called her a bad name because of her family history.

Ji-li feels bad for her little sister and doesn't think this treatment is fair. Hopefully their fate changes soon.

It's Chinese New Year, but no one celebrates. It's also Ji-li's thirteenth birthday, but that doesn't mean much anymore.

A few days later, one of their friend's dad's is arrested and taken away. Ji-li worries for her own family.

When Ji-li gets home, she finds An Yi there, crying over her mom. At the factory, all the teachers were forced to climb the chimney.

The girls cling together, neither really knowing what to say.

Suddenly Ji-li announces that she hates her grandpa. If he hadn't been a landlord, none of this wouldn't have happened. She's not even sure she believes that anymore, though.

Read the following summary of The Book of job from the Bible: God believes that Job is a humble and devout man. Satan, however, challenges God, saying that job is virtuous and moral only because God blessed him with good fortune. Satan makes a bet with God that if Job experiences suffering his devotion will falter and he will curse God. A series of disasters strike Job's life. All of his children die, his livestock dies, most of his servants are killed, and he is left with nothing. Job is devastated, but he doesn't blame God for the tragedies. Satan then plans another test for Job. He is struck with a horrible skin disease. Three of Job's friends arrive to comfort him, and Job finally questions the injustice done to him. His friends enticize him for challenging God's will. They suggest that his misfortune is probably a result of some sin he committed. Job replies that he is innocent and pleads for a fair hearing from God. God answers Job's challenge by asking him if he can do the things that God can after which Job apologizes. Finally. God scolds Job's companions and restores Job's life, giving him back his children and twice as much wealth as he had before. How is the character of Ebenezer Scrooge similar to job? O A. Scrooge and job are patient and devout men who learn greater humility. OB. Scrooge and Job go through experiences that make them change their outlook on life. Summarize the central ideas of the article on the lines below in no more than two sentences. Article : Freud's Theory of the ID, Ego, and Superego

Answers

Answer:

The article seeks to present how Freud studied and showed how the components of the human subconscious are able to reveal who individuals really are, what they want and how they behave.

Explanation:

The central idea of an article refers to the main subject that the article wants to present to the reader. In the case of "Freud's Theory of the ID, Ego, and Superego", the article's main idea is to present the study that led Freud to explain how the components of the subconscious are influential and impacting on the personality and behavior of human beings.

We can see this, mainly by the line:

"Even though these processes exist well under the surface of conscious awareness, Freud theorized that they exert an impact on a person's behavior."

Answers

The sentences using affect correctly are 1, 3, and 5, respectively "rising food prices affect...", "that injury will affect..." and "movies always affect..."

Affect vs effect

The words "affect" and "effect" sound exactly the same. That can make some people confuse them, especially because their meanings are not so completely different from each other. Let's take a look at each one:

Affect: This is a verb, and it means "to have an impact on" or "to modify/change" something or someone. For example: The pandemic affected everyone's lives in many aspects.Effect: This is a noun, and it means "consequence," "result," "impact (noun)". For example: The effect of the pandemic was quite devastating.

With that in mind, we should select options 1, 3 and 5. They are the only ones using "affect" properly, as a verb instead of a noun. The other two sentences should use the word "effect" rather than affect.

Thus, it is our conclusion that we have correctly answered this question.

A logical fallacy using something as proof or evidence that should not simply be assumed/ the evidence requires more proof, is considered _____.

Answers

A logical fallacy using something as proof or evidence that should not simply be assumed/ the evidence requires more proof, is considered begging the question.

What is a logical fallacy?

A logical fallacy is any type of flawed reasoning that leads to a false conclusion. When arguing or debating, we will often state one or more premises, that is, the pieces of information that function as the basis of our argument. Then, from those premises, we draw conclusions. For example:

Premise: the sky is very cloudy, and the clouds are dark. Conclusion: it will likely rain today.

The conclusion above makes sense considering the premise. However, it the speaker were to conclude "it will likely be sunny today," we would have a logical fallacy here.

Begging the question refers to fallacies that already start off wrong. In this case, people assume their conclusion is right and include that assumption in their premise. For example:

Premise: murder is a bad thing. Conclusion: self-defense murder is also a bad thing.

We cannot simply assume self-defense murder is a bad thing, after all the person who does it is clearly trying to save his or her own life. Therefore, this is a "begging the question" fallacy.

Sir,

I am writing to you to express my strong opposition regarding the proposed plan to construct an iron factory in the new industrial area. Though I am not entirely against the plan or against any development, the fact that the factory will be just across my school's playground is a grave mistake. It will not only disrupt the school's atmosphere but also pose a serious health hazard to the students and citizens around the place, and threaten their freedom of playing or enjoying their physical activities.

If only anything can be done to change the location of the factory, it will help preserve the atmosphere of the school and save the school. Maybe, the authorities can find ways to shift the location or try a different plan so as not to disrupt the school and its students.

Please ensure the issue brings attention to the school and its safety.

what is the difference between a tame problem and a wicked problem? provide two examples of tame problems and two examples of wicked problems.

Answers

Tame problems are the problems for which degree of uncertainty is limited but wicked problems are the ones that are difficult or impossible to solve. Example - tame problem is planning a heart surgery, wicked problem would be the effectiveness of a new medicine on the patient

What distinguishes a tame problem from a wicked problem?

A tame problem can be stated precisely, unambiguously, and completely. Math issues are tame. In contrast, a wicked problem cannot be stated in absolute terms. A wicked problem must be stated along with its solution. In other words, it is impossible to state a problem without having a solution in mind, and coming up with a new solution necessitates a fresh perspective on the issue.

A tame problem is one that has a clear solution, like the checkmate in chess. With a wicked problem, you could either go back and consider other solutions or keep iterating and perfecting your solution indefinitely.

With tame problems, solutions are either clearly correct or incorrect. A wicked problem's solution is not deemed correct or incorrect, but rather as falling somewhere between good and bad.

A tame problem can usually be solved right away, and it stays that way. It takes time and is arbitrary to judge a wicked problem's solution.

The purpose of communication is to present an idea or argument to convince the audience that the presented idea is of more value and validity than others. Justify your statement in the light of persuasive pillars.

Answers

The purpose of communication is indeed often to present ideas or arguments in order to persuade the audience that the presented idea is of more value and validity than others. This can be justified by examining the persuasive pillars, which are principles commonly used to effectively persuade and influence others. These pillars include ethos, pathos, and logos.

Ethos: Ethos refers to the credibility and trustworthiness of the speaker or source. When attempting to persuade others, it is crucial to establish and maintain a positive ethos. By presenting a well-reasoned argument backed by expertise, knowledge, and credibility, the speaker can convince the audience that their idea holds more value and validity than alternative perspectives. Demonstrating competence, authority, and integrity enhances the persuasiveness of the argument.

Pathos: Pathos appeals to the emotions and values of the audience. Persuasive communication often involves connecting with the audience on an emotional level. By tapping into their desires, fears, or aspirations, the speaker can elicit emotional responses that support the presented idea. Effective use of storytelling, vivid language, and relatable examples can create a powerful emotional connection, making the audience more receptive to the argument.

Logos: Logos refers to the logical reasoning and evidence presented to support an argument. A persuasive message must be logically coherent and supported by sound evidence. By using facts, statistics, expert opinions, and logical reasoning, the speaker can present a compelling case for their idea. Presenting a well-structured and logical argument enhances the perceived value and validity of the idea being presented.

In reality, however, cash flow analysis is one of the building blocks of a successful enterprise. The risks of ignoring cash flow management are high, especially for entrepreneurial companies. Too often, fledgling businesses show paper profits but cannot pay their bills because they run out of cash. The faster a company grows, the more likely it is to experience cash flow complications. When it came to managing cash flow, John Brandon, founder of Via Systems, Inc., a Colorado Springs computer software venture, was the typical entrepreneur. He thought cash flow analysis belonged only in textbooks on small business management. "To me," he recalled, "cash flow meant that if I looked at my checkbook and had enough money, I was OK." A decade earlier, Brandon had watched a growing business fail, and he was determined to avoid that happening again. With annual sales approaching $1 million and with Via systems poised for rapid growth, Brandon realized he was managing his company's most valuable asset by the seat of his pants. "I had developed enormous anxieties that we were going to run out of cash and not be able to pay for the expansion I wanted to take on," he noted. In its sixth year, Via Sitemaps was facing a challenge. I was a one-product company, and rather than "wait for the product to run out its life," Brandon decided "it was time to change direction." But that would take cash, and Brandon realized he "couldn't think about diversifying product lines, expanding staff, adding new locations, or acquiring new divisions. In essence, when a company's cash outflows are about to climb significantly, it's time to pay special attention to cash management.Brandon and his wife, Kathie, the company's bookkeeper, decided to bring in an expert to help them set up a cash management system. They turned to Paul Parish, a senior consultant at the firm that handled Via Systems' accounting. The Brandons wanted to answer two questions: First, was there any basis for their fear of running out of cash, and second, would they have enough cash to add new software products? To answer these questions, parish helped the Brandons prepare a cash budget, forecasting detailed cash flows eighteen months into the future, with broader estimates for a three-to-five year span. "It was hard work, pouring over financial records and trying to figure out exactly what happens to every single sales dollar that we generate," he remembered.Parish explained cash flow analysis to the Brandons in this way: "Cash flow is a cycle. Once a company makes a sale, cash passes through various stages from billing to disbursements and so on. The more efficiently it passes along, the less cash any company, big or small, needs during any particular month to keep its operations going smoothly." To track that cycle, Parish analyzed six phases of Via Systems' cash flow:1. Cash receipts: how the company invoiced customers, collected accounts receivable, and tracked late payers.2. Cash concentration: the speed and efficiency with which cash receipts were put to work for the company.3. Cash disbursements: the way Via Systems timed bill payments.4. Forecasting: the accuracy of the Brandons projections regarding the amount and timing of cash flows.5. Inventory: how much cash the company has tied up in raw materials and unsold goods.6. Bank relations: the flow of money among the company's various bank accounts and the details of its borrowing capacity. The analysis showed several weaknesses in Via Systems' cash flow cycle, including poorly timed disbursements and lack of a bank credit line. The hard work paid off handsomely. "We worked up a set of projections that showed us going from a positive cash flow of more than $8,000 in February to a negative cash flow totaling about $45,000 in March and April, when we started bringing new products to market," says Brandon. Their forecasts were on target. "When I went negative for those two months, it didnt worry me because I had faith in our long-term assumptions," he added. By May, Via Systems' cash balance climbed to $5,500 and has climbed steadily since."Before the analysis, I didn't know which steps I could take," admits Brandon. "Now I've introduced four new products to the market, and we've done beautifully...My cash flow plan is a living, breathing document."1.
