A Good Place for Maggie
by Ofelia Dumas Lachtman (excerpt)
For the last hour she had been so intent on the changing countryside that she forgot to buy gas. The gauge said empty. She drove on, dreading the moment when the motor would draw on the last drop of gasoline and give up. She was driving on a narrow country road lined with tall eucalyptus trees and nothing else. Then in a clearing on the left side of the road, she saw a battered old sign with faded red letters: G-A-S. No, it wasn’t a mirage; it was more like a miracle. With a grateful sigh she turned into the run-down station, bumping over broken concrete and coming to a stop by one of two pumps.
A weary-looking old man in grease-spotted overalls appeared beside her. “Fill ‘er up?”
“Is it cheaper if I pump it myself?” It didn’t look as if he’d take a credit card and she was low on cash.
“All the same here, missy,” the man called, rounding the car. “Fill ‘er up?”
Maggie said yes, please go ahead, and climbed out of the blue VW. Good thing I didn’t splurge on lunch, she thought, staring at the pumps. Gas is almost twice as high up here as it is in Los Angeles. But I’m not complaining. When she had driven mile after mile without finding a gas station, she had begun to think that maybe being sixteen and a half didn’t make her that smart; maybe a trip like this was a little much for her. Now she felt better. She stretched and thought, Dad would be proud of me. I’m doing what is right for me. Oh, I’ll miss my friends, especially Mim and Lorena. I’ll even miss Ryan. I wonder if he was really going to ask me to the TGI June bash? Well, that’s history. Now is now.

Helen Grey
By Christina Georgina Rossetti
Because one loves you, Helen Grey,
Is that a reason you should pout,
And like a March wind veer about,
And frown, and say your shrewish say?
Don't strain the cord until it snaps,
Don't split the sound heart with your wedge,
Don't cut your fingers with the edge
Of your keen wit; you may, perhaps.
Because you're handsome, Helen Grey,
Is that a reason to be proud?
Your eyes are bold, your laugh is loud,
Your steps go mincing on their way;
But so you miss that modest charm
Which is the surest charm of all:
Take heed, you yet may trip and fall,
And no man care to stretch his arm.
Stoop from your cold height, Helen Grey,
Come down, and take a lowlier place;
Come down, to fill it now with grace;
Come down you must perforce some day:
For years cannot be kept at bay,
And fading years will make you old;
Then in their turn will men seem cold,
When you yourself are nipped and grey.
Which line from "Helen Grey" suggests Helen has an unrealistic sense of herself?
Group of answer choices
A. Don't cut your fingers with the edge
B. Your eyes are bold, your laugh is loud
C. And like a March wind veer about
D. Stoop from your cold height, Helen Grey
In the poem "Helen Grey" by Christina Georgina Rossetti, the line that suggests Helen has an unrealistic sense of herself is "Your eyes are bold, your laugh is loud". This line is indicative of Helen's sense of vanity and self-importance that is not well-grounded in reality. The correct answer is option B.
"Helen Grey" is a poem that warns against the dangers of pride, vanity, and self-importance. It urges the reader to take heed of the passage of time and to cultivate a more modest and humble disposition, lest they suffer the same fate as Helen.
The poem is a warning to Helen about the dangers of pride, vanity, and haughtiness. It is a cautionary tale of how these traits can lead to one's downfall, and how the passage of time can make one's physical beauty fade away, leaving behind only the flaws of character that were not addressed. The poem is divided into three stanzas, each highlighting a different aspect of Helen's personality.
The first stanza talks about how she pouts and veers about like a March wind, which suggests that she is temperamental and unpredictable. The second stanza focuses on her physical appearance, highlighting her bold eyes, loud laugh, and mincing steps. Finally, the third stanza warns her about the inevitability of aging, and how it will make her old and grey, no longer the object of men's attention or desire.

If two similar waves are traveling in the same medium, then they have same wave velocity. so we can infer that
\(\qquad \tt \dashrightarrow \:v_A = v_B\)
Now, as per the formula ~ we know that :
\(\qquad \sf \dashrightarrow \:v = \lambda \cdot f \)
v = wave velocity λ = wavelengthNow, we can write it as :
\(\qquad \sf \dashrightarrow \: \lambda_A \cdot f_A = \lambda _B \cdot f_B\)
And it's also given that frequency of wave A is 3 times that of frequency of wave B.
So, let's add the relation to our equation ~
\(\qquad \sf \dashrightarrow \: \lambda_A \cdot3f_B = \lambda _B \cdot f_B\)
\(\qquad \sf \dashrightarrow \: \lambda_A \cdot3= \lambda _B\)
\(\qquad \sf \dashrightarrow \: λ_A = \frac{1}{3} λ_B\)
