The sherman antitrust act specifically prohibited tying contracts and interlocking directorates.
true or false

Answers

Answer 1

This is true that The Sherman antitrust act specifically prohibited tying contracts and interlocking directorates.

The Sherman Anti-Trust Act gave the government the right to file lawsuits against trusts and dissolve them. Any arrangement "in the nature of the trust or otherwise that was in the hindrance of trade or commerce between the different states, or with foreign powers," was deemed unlawful.

Any "monopolization, attempted monopolization, conspiracy, or combination to monopolize" is prohibited by the Sherman Act, as is "every contract, combination, or conspiracy in restraint of trade." The Supreme Court ruled in a long-ago decision that not all trade restraints are prohibited by the Sherman Act.

A significant U.S. statute known as the Sherman Antitrust Act forbade corporations from banding together or combining to create monopolies. The law, which was passed in 1890, forbade these organizations from setting, regulating, and influencing pricing in a certain market.

Two cornerstones of critical thinking are the abilities to test logic and examine evidence. You can start testing logic right now by asking the following questions about what you read:

Does the author define her key terms?
Do any of the author’s main points contradict each other?
Has the author clearly stated her assumptions (the points that she simply accepts as true without trying to prove them)?
Is the author’s material free of logical fallacies, such as jumping to conclusions or making personal attacks?
Choose a current reading assignment—a nonfiction piece rather than a novel, short story, or poem. Focus on a particular chapter or section of this assignment and test it by asking the above questions.

1. Did you answer no to any of the above questions? If so, explain:

2. Now review the same chapter or section and examine evidence. List the author's main points. Did she present enough facts, examples, or expert testimony to support each one? If not, explain why.

Answers

An example of how to apply the questions to test logic and examine evidence based on a hypothetical reading assignment:

How is it demonstrated?

Chapter/Section: "The Benefits of Exercise" in a health and fitness article

Testing Logic:

Does the author define her key terms?

The author defines key terms such as exercise, physical activity, and sedentary lifestyle.

Do any of the author’s main points contradict each other?

No, the author's main points are consistent and build upon each other to support the thesis.

Has the author clearly stated her assumptions?

The author assumes that readers understand the basic concepts of health and fitness and are motivated to improve their physical well-being.

Is the author’s material free of logical fallacies?

Yes, the author presents evidence-based arguments and avoids personal attacks or unfounded assumptions.

Examining Evidence:

The author's main points in "The Benefits of Exercise" may include:

Regular exercise can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Exercise can improve mental health and cognitive function.

Exercise can promote better sleep and energy levels.

Exercise can help maintain a healthy weight and improve overall quality of life.

To examine the evidence, one can consider whether the author presents enough facts, examples, or expert testimony to support each point. For example, the author may cite specific studies or statistics to support the health benefits of exercise, and may provide examples of successful exercise programs or individuals who have improved their health through physical activity.

The author may also reference expert opinions or guidelines from reputable health organizations. If the author does not provide enough evidence to support a particular point, it may weaken the overall argument and require further investigation or analysis.

Florida Earthquake History

United States Geological Survey

Although Florida is not usually considered to be a state subject to earthquakes, several minor shocks have occurred there. Only one of these caused damage. Additional shocks of doubtful seismic origin also are listed in earthquake documents.

A shock occurred near St. Augustine, in the northeast part of the State, in January 1879. The Nation's oldest permanent settlement, founded by Spain in 1565, reported that heavy shaking knocked plaster from walls and articles from shelves. Similar effects were noted at Daytona Beach, 50 miles south. At Tampa, the southernmost point of the felt area, the trembling was preceded by a rumbling sound at 11:30 p.m. Two shocks were reported in other areas, at 11:45 p.m. and 11:55 p.m. The tremor was felt through north and central Florida, and at Savannah, Georgia.

In January 1880, Cuba was the center of two strong earthquakes that sent severe shock waves through the town of Key West, Florida. The tremors occurred at 11 p.m. on January 22 and at 4 a.m. on the 23rd. At Buelta Abajo and San Christobal, Cuba, many buildings were thrown down and some people were killed.

The next tremor to be felt by Floridians also centered outside the State. It was the famous Charleston, South Carolina, shock in August 1886. The shock was felt throughout northern Florida, ringing church bells at St. Augustine and severely jolting other towns along that section of Florida's east coast. Jacksonville residents felt many of the strong aftershocks that occurred in September, October, and November 1886.

On June 20, 1893, Jacksonville experienced another slight shock, apparently local, that lasted about 10 seconds. Another minor earthquake shook Jacksonville at 11:15 a.m., October 31, 1900. It caused no damage.

A sudden jar caused doors and windows to rattle at Captiva in November 1948. The apparent earthquake was accompanied by sounds like distant heavy explosions. Captiva is located on Captiva Island, in the Gulf west of Fort Myers.

On November 18, 1952, a slight tremor was felt by many at Quincy, a small town about 20 miles northwest of Tallahassee. Windows and doors rattled, but no serious effects were noted. One source notes, "The shock interfered with writing of a parking ticket." It didn't say in what way.

The three Florida shocks of doubtful seismic origin rumbled through the Everglades - La Belle - Fort Myers area in July 1930, Tampa in December 1940, and the Miami - Everglades - Fort Myers area in January 1942. Most authorities attribute these incidents to blasting, but a few contend they were seismic.

why would china want to support transportation development in kenya. Exaplain?

Answers

Answer: This question refers to the construction of the Chinese-built Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Kenya. This railway will link the capital of Nairobi with the town of Naivasha. The main benefit of the railway is that it will connect the country in a more efficient way, boosting trade and industrialization.

The railway is being built by Chinese companies and engineers. There are several reasons why China would want to support transportation development in Kenya. First, the development of the Kenyan economy would provide a trading partner for China, stimulating the Chinese economy. Second, the project will provide work for Chinese builders, engineers, designers, mechanics, etc. Third, the project encourages Kenya to borrow money from China, which benefits China through the interests paid on the borrowed money.
