the first evidence for the changeover to food production is found in the near east in 8000 b.c true or false

Answers

Answer 1

The statement 'The first evidence for the changeover to food production is found in the Near East in 8000 B.C' is true as supported by archaeological evidence.

The first evidence for the changeover to food production is found in the Near East around 8000 B.C. This period marked the beginning of the Neolithic Revolution, which involved the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture and the domestication of plants and animals. The shift to food production allowed for the development of permanent settlements and the growth of complex societies.

This is supported by archaeological evidence such as the discovery of early agricultural sites and the domestication of plants and animals in this region during this time period. Additionally, studies on genetic and linguistic data also suggest that the Near East was the origin of early food production. Therefore, it can be concluded that the statement is true.

What event caused Washington to want wheat?

Answers

I'm not sure which specific event you are referring to, as George Washington's interest in wheat was likely due to a combination of factors.

As a farmer and landowner in colonial Virginia, Washington grew various crops including tobacco, corn, and wheat. However, he recognized that growing tobacco, which was the main cash crop in Virginia at the time, had some drawbacks such as depleting soil nutrients and declining prices due to oversupply.
In contrast, wheat was a more sustainable and profitable crop to grow. It could be grown in rotation with other crops to maintain soil fertility and yield a higher return per acre than tobacco. Additionally, Washington believed that wheat production could help promote self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on imported goods.
Therefore, while there may have been specific events or circumstances that contributed to Washington's interest in wheat, it was primarily driven by his desire to improve agricultural practices and support economic growth in colonial Virginia.

Read the article, "This Map Shows the Scale of the 16th- and 17th-Century Scottish Witch Trials" located in the module resources. When reviewing this article, you may consult the map or the text. As you examine the article, find stories, details, and words that stand out as topics of diversity.

How does your peers' understanding of the article inform your understanding of seeing the same historical moment from more than one perspective?

While reading this article, the diversity-related word that stood out to me was ‘woman.’ When looking at an account of a historical event, it is important to consider what perspective of the event we are hearing. Historically, women’s voices have been marginalized and I’m sure that if a woman’s perspective of these events was recorded, we would have had a much different history. Diversity is what makes people unique and instead of celebrating these unique women, they were called witches and murdered. Sadly, these women were not witches, they were mothers, sisters, friends, and wives. Because these women did not fit the societal standard of what a woman should be at the time, they were persecuted and tortured to death. In the case of Isobel Young, whose husband claimed "that his wife had attempted "to kill him with magic after quarreling about an unsavory house guest." it sounds like she just didn’t take her husband’s things lying down.

What this story, and many other stories in history, tell us about the relationship between culture, identity, power, and history is that whoever has the power and falls within the confines of the acceptable identity within a society will write history. Those in power are in control of the historical narrative and are the voices that we have heard for generations. If more diverse perspectives were recorded during this event, then countless lives could have been saved in other "witch trials" elsewhere. Exploring all voices and perspectives, especially marginalized ones, is the only way that we can gain the whole picture of a past event and the only way to preserve the truth for the future.

-Avery

After spending some time with the article, the term that stood out to me the most was the author Steve Katz's observation that the European witch hunts represented a "fear" of women by dominantly white, male Christian society. They rationalized this fear with how women might coerce or control men, and in that context was perceived as "sorcery." I felt this stood out as a topic of diversity because it represents a core inequality between men and women in society, where men used their power and influence to unfairly persecute and execute those who challenged their position of authority. Reading some of the anecdotes, it sounds like the only "crime" that occurred was that a woman demonstrated "patterns of verbal and physical aggression," as noted with the example of Isabel Young. The fact that her husband was a primary accuser helps to reinforce the notion that gender inequality and social norms played factors in the witch hunts of Scotland.

This resource also told us much about Christian European culture in the 17th century and how seriously people took accusations of witchcraft as an affront to their religious values or people's identity as a "servant of god" or some equivalent. We can still observe these disparities in gender identity today, where marginalized groups continue to be stereotyped. Any attempt to think or act differently might not simply be rejected but considered a threat to their society.

In the context of history, this map shows an evident and systematic pattern of persecution for women throughout Scotland. It highlights a crucial facet of history that the other resources from this week tried to impart. We can teach history in several ways, but its context is essential. Before reading this article, it made me think about the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts. However, I didn't consider much about those events' underlying cultural, identity, and power factors. Now that I have learned more about these trials in other parts of the world, I can't help but wonder more about how diversity played a role in these historical events.

Answers

From reading this article and both of my peers' responses, it is clear to see that the 16th and 17th century witch trials in Scotland were rooted in fear and systemic oppression of women and other marginalized groups.

Through the anecdotes presented, we can see the way in which women were framed as the ‘witch’ or the one in control due to their verbal and physical aggression. This paints a picture of how, at the time, certain gender roles were expected to be respected and any deviation from that was viewed as a threat to religious values and social norms.

Both my peers highlight the importance of understanding the way power played a role in these events and how crucial it is to look at a historical moment from all perspectives to gain a whole picture of the truth. This was insightful in getting me to think about the Salem Witch Trials and it further emphasizes the importance of recognizing all voices in history, especially marginalized ones.

Nationalism wasn’t very big in early Europe, but later throughout the centurion the various kingdoms and duchies began to crystallize into empires and nations. I will tackle the colonizers in order, first the Portuguese and Spanish made colonies westward to Asia because the Ottoman Empire had complete control of the spice trade from Asia. The Portuguese went under Africa and the cape of good hope and established colonies in India, Spain sent Columbus to discover another route and he found the Americas, and primal civilizations that had lots of gold, the Spanish began expanding there as soon as possible. This clashes with the interest there of the Portuguese so both of them made a deal to divided the world. Spain would get all of the America’s except for Brazil and Portugal would get all of Africa. Both empires later collapsed, mainly due to Napoleon but their colonies made them super rich but very poor mismanagement is one of the reasons for mass poverty in South America. The Dutch empire is very interesting because it was extremely large for such a small nation. The Dutch empire spanned in the americas, Africa until the British kicked them out of New Amsterdam and South Africa. But their main colony was always Indonesia, they actually went there because of hostility of the Mughal empire, this move opened up trade with Japan and china who actually liked the Dutch because they didn’t push their religion that much like the Spanish did. Also the VOC was like the OG and the British EOC ( East India trading company) was seen as an cheap knockoff at first and the VOC actually laid the foundation and structure for the British to take over India. Speaking of the British they won Canada after beating French, America revolted, They finished the Mughal empire, took over Dutch South Africa and Ottoman Egypt for the suez and earlier got Gibraltar from the Spanish giving them complete control of the Mediterranean. They even got into what’s called the great game with the Russians but all these empires died out in the Cold War.

Nationalism and Rivalries during the Age of Exploration:

Nationalism fueled the desire of European nations to assert dominance and expand their influence globally. Competition between countries seeking new trade routes, resources, and territories led to rivalries.

This rivalry was a major driving force behind exploration as each nation sought to outdo others in acquiring wealth and power.

Development of Monarchies and Their Effects:

Monarchies in Europe consolidated power, centralizing authority under the king or queen. This strengthened governments' ability to finance and support exploration, leading to new trade routes, discoveries, and colonies.

It also led to the spread of state-sponsored religions, with the monarchs as heads of the church, which often influenced colonization efforts.

Reasons for European Exploration and Colonization:

European exploration was driven by various factors, including the search for new trade routes to Asia, the desire to acquire wealth through trade and resources, spreading Christianity, and establishing territorial dominance.

Effects of Exploration on Europe and Colonial Societies:

Exploration brought significant changes to Europe, such as increased wealth through trade and access to new resources. It also expanded European influence globally, leading to the spread of ideas, technologies, and cultures.

Reactions to the Arrival of European Explorers:

The responses to European explorers varied among indigenous peoples. Some welcomed trade opportunities and alliances, while others resisted colonization, leading to conflicts.

European governments, on the other hand, often celebrated successful explorations and utilized the acquired wealth and resources to strengthen their positions in Europe and expand their global empires.
