should the united states have dropped the bomb? why is that a difficult question? (WWII)

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

This is a very opinionated and debated question.

The Common Theory (US Perspective):

The bomb had to be dropped on the cities in order to prevent the prolonging of war and death. More casualties would happen on both sides, Japanese and American.

Counterargument:

The bombs should not have been dropped because the Japanese were going to surrender soon. This was due to the USSR invading Japanese occupied China, which the Japanese did not want to be occupied by the Soviets. So either way, Japan would most likely have surrendered in 1945 on American terms due to the fear of Soviet occupation.

Other Arguments:

The bomb was used to show off American military might since WW2 was ending the Cold War between the US and USSR was beginning. The atom bombs did scare the Soviets when they were used on Japan.

The lost generation of writers who gathered in Paris was considered "lost" because a. the war had left them with a sense of meaninglessness.

The novelist, poet, and playwright Gertrude Stein refer to her generation of authors as The Lost Generation. They had a sense of loss as a result of World War I and its aftermath. The Lost Generation started to doubt established ideals as a result of the disappointment of people who came of age during the conflict.

Many of their morals and beliefs had been destroyed by the conflict, leaving them disillusioned and unsure about the future. This feeling of meaninglessness is reflected in the literature of famous authors like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein who perfectly portrayed the cynicism and aimlessness of the time.

What does Martin Luther mean by the line “You can buy anything thing in Rome: Sex or salvation.”?

Answers

Answer:

highlights and condemn the business motive of the Roman Church.

Explanation:

Martin Luther, the father of Protestant Reformation, witnessed that the Roman Church and its clergies would promise salvation to the people with some amount of money and donation. This practice of selling salvation truly disturbed him because he believed that salvation was free and could be achieved only through faith and God's forgiveness.

Thus, when he said that “You can buy anything thing in Rome: Sex or salvation.” he means that salvation could be bought just as any other service in Rome. It highlights and condemn the business motive of the Roman Church.

after the pearl harbor attack in 1941, president roosevelt ordered the army to round up japanese americans and place them in internment camps. what did they lose as a result of this act?

Answers

The Japanese Americans who were placed in internment camps after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 lost a great deal as a result of this act. Firstly, they lost their freedom and were forced to leave their homes, businesses, and belongings behind.

Many were not allowed to bring anything except what they could carry in a single suitcase. This caused immense psychological trauma and forced them to start over from scratch when they were released from the camps.

Secondly, they lost their dignity and were subjected to inhumane living conditions. The camps were often overcrowded, lacked privacy, and had poor sanitation. Families were separated, and individuals had to live in cramped quarters with strangers. They also lost their sense of community and belonging, as they were isolated from their friends, relatives, and fellow Japanese Americans.

Lastly, many Japanese Americans lost their livelihoods as a result of being placed in internment camps. They were unable to work or attend school, which meant that they could not earn a living or pursue their dreams and ambitions. This caused financial hardship and long-term economic consequences, as many were unable to recover from the loss of their businesses and savings.

In the wake of Partition, Hindus in Pakistan felt threatened by their Muslim neighbors and decided to migrate to India, while Muslims in India felt that they would be safer in the newly formed Pakistan.

After India gained independence in 1947, Hindu-Muslim riots led to large-scale migration of Hindus and Muslims between India and Pakistan. Hindus and Muslims had been living together for centuries, but the Partition of India and the creation of the new nation of Pakistan, with its majority Muslim population, resulted in deep divisions among the two religions. This led to violence and displacement of people on a massive scale.

Apart from the religious divide, other factors such as poverty and fear of violence also led to the migration. People from the lower economic strata, unable to cope with the upheaval caused by Partition, chose to move to a different nation, hoping for a better life.

Answers

According to the excerpt, the Cyclopes distinguish themselves from other men through their isolation and violence. The correct option is a) and b).

The passage describes the Cyclopes as "hermit-like creatures" who live apart from other humans in "cavernous" dwellings. This isolation suggests that the Cyclopes are not interested in participating in the communal life of human society. Instead, they prefer to keep to themselves and maintain a sense of independence.

Furthermore, the passage also emphasizes the violent nature of the Cyclopes. They are depicted as fierce and dangerous creatures who "feared nothing" and were "ruthless in their violence." This violence suggests that the Cyclopes are not afraid to use force to get what they want or to protect themselves from perceived threats.

However, the passage does not mention knowledge or honesty as distinguishing traits of the Cyclopes. It is possible that they possess these qualities, but the text does not provide any evidence to support this claim.

Overall, the excerpt suggests that the Cyclopes are unique and different from other humans in their isolation and violence. They are independent and fierce creatures who prefer to live apart from society and are not afraid to use force to protect themselves. The correct option is a) isolation and b). violence

Based on the graph, defense spending in the United States
decreased when the United States focused on the Vietnam War.

increased in the years immediately after World War II.
increased during the arms race against the USSR.

Answers

Based on the given options, the correct statement is:

Defense spending in the United States increased during the arms race against the USSR.

Defense spending in the United States has varied over time due to various factors and geopolitical events. Here is a 200-word answer highlighting the key points:

During the Vietnam War, which took place from 1955 to 1975, defense spending in the United States did not decrease but actually increased. The Vietnam War was a costly conflict, and the U.S. government allocated substantial resources to support its military involvement in Southeast Asia. The war led to a significant expansion of the defense budget, as the U.S. military deployed troops, supplied weapons, and conducted operations in Vietnam.

In terms of the stockpiling of nuclear weapons, defense spending also increased. The arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War fueled a buildup of nuclear arsenals on both sides. This led to increased defense spending as the United States sought to maintain nuclear parity with the USSR and develop advanced weapon systems.

After World War II, defense spending in the United States did indeed increase. The war had brought about a massive mobilization of resources, and the United States emerged as a global superpower. The onset of the Cold War, coupled with the need to rebuild and modernize the military, prompted significant investments in defense, resulting in increased spending during the immediate post-war years.
