Read the excerpt from “Broken Chain.”

He asked his mother if he could have braces, like Frankie Molina, her godson, but he asked at the wrong time. She was at the kitchen table licking the envelope to the house payment. She glared up at him. “Do you think money grows on trees?”

His mother clipped coupons from magazines and newspapers, kept a vegetable garden in the summer, and shopped at Penney’s and Kmart.

What is a theme expressed in this excerpt?

Mothers have better things to do than managing money.
Spending money is not always an option.
Many people enjoy the rewards of gardening.
Summer is a busy time of year for mothers and retailers.

First Read: The Day I Saved a Life: What changed specifically for the author on this particular day? How was his life different after it? Provide specific examples from the text to support your response.

Answers

Answer:yes

Explanation:

In "The Day I Saved a Life," the author recounts the story of the day he saved a man's life. Specifically, the author was on his way to work when he noticed a man lying on the sidewalk, apparently unconscious. After calling 911 and administering CPR, the man was revived and taken to the hospital.

What changed for the author on this particular day was his perspective on life and the value of helping others. The author states that "I realized that day that I wanted to do something with my life that would make a difference" (paragraph 6). He also reflects on the impact that his actions had on the man's family, writing "I could see the relief and gratitude in their eyes as they hugged me and thanked me for saving their loved one" (paragraph 11).

After saving the man's life, the author's life was different in several ways. He was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare, and enrolled in nursing school to become a registered nurse. He also began volunteering in his community and helping others in need. In the text, he writes "I found my calling that day, and I have been working as a nurse ever since. I have also continued to volunteer in my community and help others whenever I can" (paragraph 12).

Overall, the author's experience of saving a life transformed his perspective on the value of helping others, and inspired him to pursue a career in healthcare and become a lifelong volunteer.

ARTICLE;

TITLE: Smart Shoppers

You can save a lot of money if you read the store sale flyer before you make your shopping list. I know this because I have been a clerk at Berry’s Supermarket for 4 years. I clean the store, stock the shelves, and help the customers find what they are looking for. I have seen a lot of foolish shoppers pay full price for things they don’t need. On the other hand, I have seen a lot of smart shoppers too.

The smart shoppers always look at the sales flyers before they begin shopping. The flyers come with the newspaper, but we also place some right by the front doors. Shoppers can pick them up when they walk in the store. The flyers list all of the items that are on sale that week. The flyers show what the prices are. Sometimes the prices are half off!

This is good news for the shoppers, but sometimes it is not good news for me. When a sale is really big, many people come to Berry’s. The store becomes very crowded. Sometimes, customers buy all of an item that is on sale. Then other customers get mad because they have come to the store just to buy that item and cannot find it. Those customers should not get mad at Berry’s, though. The store can only hold so many products! Plus, if an item is sold out and a customer still has an interest in buying it, Berry’s will give the customer a "rain check." This will allow them to buy the item at the sale price as soon as it gets restocked, even after the sale is finished.

Berry’s has to give out the most rain checks when the store has its "Back to School Spectacular." In addition to the specials that run for the week, there are new specials every weekday. On Monday, folders are on sale for $1. On Tuesday, notebooks are on sale for $2. On Wednesday, backpacks are on sale for $5. On Thursday, lunchboxes are half price. On Friday, crayons and markers are half off.

I am sure that Berry’s will be more crowded than ever for the sale. I will have to stock a lot of shelves, and I'm sure I'll have to write a lot of rain checks. I'll be happy when the weekend starts!

Coatis are raccoon-like mammals native to South and Central America. Many people find them cute, and tourists have made a habit of offering the coatis food. Coatis realize that it is easier to seek out tourists than to search the forest for bugs. Like humans, they prefer junk food to what they should be eating. For their part, tourists do little to discourage the animals. After all, a coati drinking soda makes for a great vacation photo. Scientists, however, say that coatis and humans do best when they stay away from each other.

Answers

Answer:

I would choose age 18.

Explanation ( this is the answer )

I would choose age 18.

Explanation ( this is the answer )

I would choose to be 18 because 18 years old is the age when our independence shows. When we are 18, all we have learnt through Preschool to High school will be applied. We will be able to work, go to college, be in a formal relationship and more! We will be able to interact with other human beings independently. We won't be like, Mom or why do you always have to embarass me like that. We will be able to play any sport we want, choose our friends and we will be able to find our true interest. We will laugh at ourselves when we were younger, at all the things we have done, and we will finally start our life. When you are 18 years old, all the pain of homework, tests, and essays will finally pay off, because as we know, Hard work Always pays off.

If I could choose one age to stay for my whole life I would choose to be 20 years old. The reason why I would choose 20 years old is because it seems like a very exciting time in your life. The reason why I say this is because everything seems more interesting when you’re 20. Most people are just starting college, or have been in college for a couple of years. They’re just figuring out how the world works and how interesting it can be. People who are 20 years old have enough knowledge to get by usually but have so much more to discover. They have to discover taxes. They have to discover how love works. They have to discover how college works. They discover so many things. It’s all new to them and it’s very interesting. That’s why I would personally choose to be 20 years old If I could be one age for the rest of my life.

Howie setting related to conflict?

In literature, the setting can play a role in shaping the conflict of a story. The location, time period, and social conditions of a story can all contribute to the conflicts that arise within it. For example, a story set in a war-torn country may have conflicts related to war and survival, while a story set in a wealthy, upper-class community may have conflicts related to class and power.

However, it is not always the case that the setting is the cause of the conflict. Conflicts can also come from internal struggles of characters, relationship dynamics, or other factors.

At one point, Judge Duffy wishes out loud that reporters were there to help get to the bottom of Nellie's story. Nellie thinks to herself,
"I got very much frightened at this, for if there is any one who can ferret out a mystery it is a reporter. I felt that I would rather face a mass of expert doctors, policemen, and detectives than two bright specimens of my craft..." Interpret what Nellie meant by this quote in the context of what you know about the story.

Answers

Answer: i believe Nellie is explaining that she understands that reporters are the ones that can really uncover a mystery (ferreting out - to solve or uncover something). She is saying she would rather face many professionals, who would be quite anxiety inducing, than a reporter. She also shows she knows she’s good at what she does. from this, it seems as if she’s also a reporter.

Nag was asleep, and Rikki-tikki looked at his big back, wondering which would be the best place for a good hold. "If I don't break his back at the first jump,” said Rikki, "he can still fight; and if he fights—Oh, Rikki!” He looked at the thickness of the neck below the hood, but that was too much for him; and a bite near the tail would only make Nag savage. "It must be the head,” he said at last; 'the head above the hood; and when I am once there, I must not let go.” Then he jumped. The head was lying a little clear of the water-jar, under the curve of it; and, as his teeth met, Rikki braced his back against the bulge of the red earthenware to hold down the head.
