Answers

The Hunger Games is an incredible book if you want a dystopian, but Six of Crows is my all time favorite!
Ok here is one of my favorite books, Esperanza Rising. It’s about a girl who flees with her family from Mexico after a terrible tragedy strikes her home. She then settles in a camp for Mexican farm workers. She has always lived a care free life since her family was rich, but now she has to get adjusted to a new hardworking life in California during the Great Depression. Overall it’s an amazing book 10/10 recommend.

Now if you want something easy and quick to read I recommend Inside out and Back Again. It’s about a Vietnamese girl who has to flee her home during the Vietnam War and settle in the U.S. It’s kinda similar to Esperanza Rising but the difference is that this book is a memoir, which is basically a book made up of different poems that together make a story. So pretty easy to read but such a nice story.

Hope this helps and good luck finishing filling out your reading log!

Read "The Debt” by Paul Laurence Dunbar.

This is the debt I pay
Just for one riotous day,
Years of regret and grief,
Sorrow without relief.

Pay it I will to the end —
Until the grave, my friend,
Gives me a true release —
Gives me the clasp of peace.

Slight was the thing I bought,
Small was the debt I thought,
Poor was the loan at best —
God! but the interest!

What does the stress on the words at the beginning and end of lines 9 and 10 help show about the speaker?

He purchased something without knowing how much it would cost.
He thought for a while before purchasing the small thing he wanted.
He did not know that he would eventually have to pay back the loan.
He did not realize that a thing so small could affect his life so greatly.

Answers

The stress on the words at the beginning and end of lines 9 and 10, "Poor" and "interest," respectively, helps to show that the speaker had not fully realized the cost of the small thing he had bought.

Answer: The stress on the words at the beginning and end of lines 9 and 10 in the poem "The Debt" by Paul Laurence Dunbar helps to emphasize the determination and resolve of the speaker

Explanation:

By placing stress on the words "Pay" and "will" at the beginning of line 9 and "end" and "grave" at the end of line 10, the speaker emphasizes their unwavering commitment to fulfilling the debt they owe. These words draw attention to the speaker's resolute decision to continue paying the debt until their life's end, even if it means carrying the burden until they find release in death.

This stress creates a sense of determination and persistence in the speaker's tone. The emphasis on these words highlights the speaker's steadfastness and unwavering commitment to settling their obligations, even though the debt may have initially seemed insignificant or small.

Overall, the stressed words in lines 9 and 10 help to portray the speaker as someone who is steadfast, resolved, and willing to face the consequences of their actions, acknowledging the weight of their debt and the commitment they have made to repay it.

Read the paragraph. Then answer the question that follows.

Perhaps you wanted pizza for dinner, but were out voted by the rest of the family who wanted chili. This is similar to what happens in a community. One person has to give up a right for the good of the group. Sometimes citizens' duties and rights conflict with each other. A good example is a public protest. People have the right to meet in groups and share ideas. However, a protest can disrupt traffic or other normal activities. A city must provide extra police protection to keep people safe. Therefore, the city has the right to require permission in advance for a protest. Government must make laws to balance the rights of individuals and different groups of people.

Which of the following statements best describes this paragraph?

A. The paragraph describes the purpose of laws in a community but lacks the use of any text connections.
B. The paragraph describes a simple comparison between a family protest and a community protest.
