Nowadays, people send quick and informal emails or text messages when they want to communicate with friends and family. Historians predict that baby boomers, people who were born between 1946 and 1964, may be the last generation to write and send letters regularly.

There is something wonderful about unfolding a piece of paper that contains a special message just for you. Reading letters creates a visual and emotional experience similar to the experience of viewing a painting. However, unlike paintings, letters are personal items to be held and cherished. One can still write beautiful, emotional, and personal things in an email, but the reader cannot feel the weight of the paper in their hands.

Letter writing is a unique literary genre because letters are not generally written for publication. The private element of a letter adds an interesting quality that other genres lack. Letters are therefore able to tell a story in a new and unique way. Letters offer a priceless view into the lives of people who are normally very private. Presidents, army generals, and even priests have published personal letters. Compiling collections of letters into books has become increasingly popular over the years. The letters of many famous people have been published as books, including Jane Austen, Abraham Lincoln, and Mark Twain.

Today, with the increasing popularity of instant, online communication, letter writing is treated with a sense of nostalgia. As the baby boomer generation begins to age, it is possible that we will lose the tradition of handwriting letters altogether. Without letters, future generations will miss out on personal, privately-held interpretations of life experiences. Losing this art form may impact how future generations view our current age.

their life. Whether it is due to not getting a job, a failed relationship, or an event not
turning out as expected, disappointment can either be temporary or can linger for an
extended period, depending on the situation and one's coping mechanisms. However,
self-compassion is crucial when dealing with disappointment, especially for those raised
with critical parents or those who are self-critical. Studies by Kristin Neff, a leading
researcher in this area, suggest that self-compassion, not critical self-talk, is crucial
in dealing with the hurt resulting from disappointment.
To develop self-compassion, three components must be present: self-kindness,
common humanity, and mindfulness. Self-kindness involves being gentle and
understanding with ourselves in the face of difficulties rather than harshly judging
ourselves. Common humanity involves recognizing that suffering and imperfection are a
normal part of the human experience and we are not alone in our struggles.
Mindfulness involves being present and aware of our thoughts and feelings without
judgment or over-identification. Practicing self-compassion has many benefits, including
increased resilience, improved general well-being, and reduced stress and anxiety. By
rewiring our nervous system and training our mind and body to respond differently to
disappointment, we will likely experience improved mental and emotional health.
However, practicing self-compassion may not come easy to some people, particularly if
they have experienced childhood trauma or grew up in dysfunctional households. It may
involve taking one step forward and two steps back until they gain sufficient momentum
to overcome their childhood wounds. Practicing self-compassion involves being aware
of our critical inner voice and observing how we talk to ourselves. Acknowledging that
disappointment is a normal part of life is also essential.
The Internal Family System (IFS) therapy identifies the Self as the core or essence of a
person. The Self is believed to be the seat of consciousness and encompasses a range
of qualities, such as compassion, curiosity, clarity, and calmness. The Self is described
as a calm and centered presence that can observe and engage with different parts of
ourselves without becoming overwhelmed or reactive. The more we practice
mindfulness and self-compassion, the more we inhabit this compassionate, curious,
clear, and calm Self. We can effectively deal with disappointment by engaging with our
feelings through these four filters instead of being overwhelmed with negative emotions.
In conclusion, disappointment is a common experience in life, and practicing
self-compassion is crucial in dealing with it. The components of self-compassion include
self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, which can improve mental and
emotional health. However, practicing self-compassion may not come easy to everyone,
especially those who have experienced childhood trauma or grew up in dysfunctional
households. Nonetheless, by being aware of our critical inner voice, acknowledging
disappointment as a normal part of life, and inhabiting the Self, we can effectively deal
with disappointment and transform our lives.
