The right to make my dreams come true,
I ask, nay, I demand of life,
Nor shall fate's deadly contraband
Impede my steps, nor countermand;
Too long my heart against the ground
Has beat the dusty years around,
And now at length I rise! I wake!
And stride into the morning break!

Which sentence has a misplaced modifier?
Answer:
B. It was the frog that caught my eye on the lily pad in the pond.
Explanation:
In sentence B, "It was the frog that caught my eye on the lily pad in the pond," the phrase "on the lily pad in the pond" is a modifier that describes where the frog was located. However, the placement of this modifier creates confusion because it seems to modify "my eye" instead of "frog."
To clarify the intended meaning, the modifier should be placed closer to the noun it is meant to modify. A possible revision could be:
"The frog on the lily pad in the pond caught my eye."

Racing to Race
Carlo stopped to rest for a minute and tried to catch his breath. He’d been running for so long that he had pains in his side and his legs were beginning to hurt. He hunched over and tried to expand his lungs, but it was like trying to suck air out of a bicycle tire. His body was too exhausted to even allow him to take a deep breath, and he started to wheeze again.
“Great,” he thought, “let me just add asthma to my expanding list of ailments. I can’t believe that I can’t even jog two miles without completely collapsing!” He finally gave in to his aching body and laid down on the grass to recuperate. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine himself running on the school track in the 1,600-meter race. He pictured himself running steadily toward the finish line, running effortlessly like a cheetah in the jungle. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear Meiya approach.
“Hey sleepyhead, what are you doing napping on Sean’s lawn in the middle of the day?” Meiya asked playfully.
Carlo quickly sat up, breathing normally now and feeling a little embarrassed. “I am trying to get in shape to try out for track, but I can’t even run two miles,” he said dejectedly.
“Wait, how many months are you out of surgery? Didn’t you just finish rehab last week?” Meiya asked. “You can’t expect to run two miles the first day.”
It had been six months since Carlo’s surgery and he specifically remembered the doctor telling him he could start running after six months. But he thought about what Meiya had said and realized she had a good point. After his surgery, the doctor did say rehab would be crucial to his recovery but that it would take time for him to gain back full use of his leg. He thought about how a baby had to learn to walk before it could run. He remembered when his nephew was learning to crawl; within days it seemed like he was walking. Running didn’t come right away, Carlo remembered. He realized it was the same with his therapy. The maximum he had run in the past month was one mile on the treadmill, so he realized that Meiya was probably right. He would have to work at building up his endurance and set more realistic goals for himself. As he thought about what he had already accomplished, he started to smile and felt like a weight was being lifted off his shoulders. He realized that he had run almost a mile and a half before his body started to protest and if he kept working hard, he could get back to where he was before his accident.
“Since when did you get so smart, Dr. Meiya?” he teased. “Do you want to race to the next mailbox?”
“You’re on!” she challenged and took off running at full speed.
Question 1
Part A
What is a central theme of “Racing to Race?”
Exercise can help heal a person’s physical body.
When people work together, they can accomplish more.
Hard work and patience will eventually pay off.
Perseverance is something that is difficult to achieve.
Question 2
Part B
Which statement best shows how the theme identified in Part A is developed in the story?
Carlo is impatient about his ability to train for track tryouts, but after his conversation with Meiya, he realizes it will take time and work to heal his injury and fully recover.
Carlo pictures himself winning a big race on the school track team; when he realizes that he may not be able to run, he is very discouraged and disappointed.
Meiya knows that she is faster than Carlo, so she does her best to encourage him and also lets him win a race between them to boost his spirits.
Carlo realizes that he may not be able to compete on the school track team but also discovers that, with time, he will still be able to participate in a sport he loves.
Answer:
Question 1: Hard work and patience will eventually pay off.
Question 2: Carlo is impatient about his ability to train for track tryouts, but after his conversation with Meiya, he realizes it will take time and work to heal his injury and fully recover.
Explanation:
If I am wrong, I am sorry. But Im pretty sure :) If I'm wrong lemme know and I'll remove the answer.
We can say that the theme of the story is that hard work and patience will pay off, as shown in the fourth answer option in part A. This can be confirmed by the statement that even without being able to compete, Carlo knows that in time he will be able to practice his favorite sport, as shown in the last answer option in part B.
We can arrive at this answer because:
The text above shows how sad Carlo is because he had to have his leg operated on and is no longer able to practice athletics, a sport he loves. He gets frustrated and angry that his leg doesn't match his efforts. However, Carlo's friend says this is normal as Carlo still is recovering from the surgery and this is a slow process. In this case, Carlo understands that he needs to be patient, as overtime his leg will improve and this will allow him to participate in athletics again.

I sit at my desk listening to thunder growl outside my window. Flashes of light burst through the darkness, and wind races past my window. The thrilling combination of sight and sound conjures up visions of dragons roaring proudly, breathing fire, and soaring across the midnight sky. Dragons first fascinated me when I was a little girl. They have followed me ever since. The magnificent creatures appeared in storybooks I read in the library, paintings I saw in museums, movies I watched in the theater, and the dreams I had in my sleep. By the time I was thirteen, one question consumed me. I wanted to know if dragons ever existed, so I set out on a quest for facts.
2
As I started my research, I discovered many skeptics. Scientists presented evidence to show why dragons could not—and did not—exist. They explained that it would be impossible for dragons to fly because they would be too big. They laughed at the idea of dragons breathing fire. They pointed out that no other animal has ever done this. They said that if dragons had lived, someone would have found remains somewhere in the world. No bones about it, there were plenty of logical explanations. It would have been easy for me to accept that the only place dragons ever existed was in the imaginations of those who believed.
3
I could have given up, but I thought about my grandmother. She always told me that "people who believe that science is the answer to everything are missing out on everything else." With her words in mind, I searched some more. There were many facts that hinted that dragons may not be fictional. I noticed that cultures across the world all described dragons in similar ways. This was odd because they had no way to communicate with each other. I found dragons mentioned in more than just stories. They appeared in old legal papers, in the travel logs of Marco Polo, and in the Bible. I saw that the Chinese calendar uses a different animal each year. Dragons are included along with eleven real animals. I began to believe it was a real possibility that all of these people were talking about a creature that actually existed.
4
With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. I found that some experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons. They suggested that a dragon could have four stomachs like a cow. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. This would give it the ability to fly. If it forced out air when diving toward the earth, it might release gases which could ignite into flame. When the animal died, the stomachs would release strong acids that would dissolve its dead body over time. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way.
5
I doubt we will ever truly know whether dragons existed. There may always be two sides to the fiery debate. Some will say the stories come from active imaginations. Some will believe with all their hearts that the legendary creatures roamed our ancient world. I don't know for certain which side to believe, but the sound and fury of a night like this makes me smile. It rekindles my childhood dreams and keeps the exciting possibility alive.
Which best states the main idea of the text?
(A) I have found no proof that dragons ever existed.
(B) I have found some proof that dragons may have existed.
(C) I have always wondered if dragons existed, and I hope they did.
(D) I have not been able to decide if dragons ever existed or not.

Through many of the early chapters of Little Women, the March girls make reference to the allegorical Pilgrim’s Progress. Explain how one of the girls, or the family as a whole, relates to the characters and themes in Pilgrim’s Progress. Include details that indicate comparisons that Louisa May Alcott makes between Little Women and Pilgrim’s Progress.
Answer:
This book is prefaced by the novel The Pilgrim's Progress that is a symbol of how to live as a Christian. In this preface it is included the females character of the book, MERCY, no its male character, so it is a sign that this book is a guide for young girls, it is a guide to get the salvation and the self-improvement.
Alcott wants to emphasize that religion is more important that everyday details of life. The four March sisters have to follow saintly feet and have a spiritual journey through their lives, in spite their situation as "little tripping maids".
"Tell them of Mercy; she is one
Who early hath her pilgrimage begun.
Yea, let young damsels learn of her to prize
The world which is to come, and so be wise;
For little tripping maids may follow God
Along the ways which saintly feet have trod."
