PLZ VERY QUICK
The Mystery of Loch Ness
By Kayden Mitchell

Of all the mysteries in the world, none has been as popular as that of the Loch Ness Monster. Perhaps the biggest mystery is whether it is convincing evidence or a simple desire to believe that keeps the myth alive.

Loch Ness is a lake in Scotland. The loch, or lake, is known for sightings of a mysterious monster. Most who see this monster, known as Nessie, describe something with a long neck and several humps above the water. Sometimes the "monster" is moving in these sightings, and sometimes it is still. Many have suggested that Nessie might be a plesiosaur (plea-see-a-soar), an aquatic dinosaur that was trapped in the loch after the last ice age.

The plesiosaur theory presents several problems. First, the plesiosaur is an air breather. Such a creature would need to surface often and, therefore, be seen more frequently. Second, it's unlikely that the same creature has lived in the loch since the last ice age. Today's creature would have to be the offspring of an original plesiosaur trapped long ago. This would suggest multiple creatures in the loch (needed to produce offspring). Again, sightings would be more frequent if this were the case.

So from a purely logical stand point, the existence of such a large and ancient creature is unlikely. But assume for a minute that it is possible. What would a plesiosaur need to live in an enclosed lake?

Tropical waters: Scientists believe plesiosaurs were warm-blooded. Like crocodiles and alligators, plesiosaurs would need to live in warm waters. The loch is very cold with temperatures averaging about 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 Celsius).
Food: Like other warm-blooded creatures, plesiosaurs would need a large quantity of food. If there is a group of Nessies, then even more food would be needed. Because the loch is full of silt (underwater dust) not much light gets into the deepest areas. So the food chain, which would depend on plankton, is very weak at its base. As a result, there is probably not enough food to support such a large creature.

However, the plesiosaur theory is not the only one. Many other ideas attempt to explain the sightings and "photographs." But two separate sonar surveys of the loch have not found any evidence of a creature larger than a salmon. The last survey1, completed in 2007 by the British Broadcasting Company (BBC), involved 600 different sonar beams. Using satellite navigation systems, the team made sure every inch of the loch was searched. The team found nothing.

With cell phones and digital cameras, one would think that sightings of Nessie would increase. This has not happened. The BBC team believes the legend of Nessie has endured because people see what they want to see. To prove this, the team used a fence post, raising it before groups of tourists. Afterwards several of the tourists asked to draw pictures of what they had seen drew pictures of a monster's head.

1 "BBC 'proves' Nessie does not exist." 27 July, 2003. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3096839.stm

Based on the essay, what makes people think they have seen something in the loch?
The many sonar studies have identified strange objects in the water.
The myth of the creature makes people imagine they have seen one.
The sightings have occurred over a very long period of time.
The simple explanations suggest reasons why a creature may have survived.

Douglass did not write this text to reflect on his personal development but rather to argue that slavery should be abolished. In the Narrative, he explicitly and implicitly responds to the positions of people who supported or were indifferent to slavery. Through the episodes he tells, Douglass conveys his position that slavery was terrible (not just mildly unpleasant) for slaves, that it corrupted (not helped) slave owners, and that as an institution, it was abhorrent (not necessary). It is worth noting that this last position is the hardest to trace and analyze.

What larger idea do these lines develop about memories? [RL.8.2]

Brown Girl Dreaming

Answers

The last lines of the poem "our father, fading away" suggest that memories are not always easy to forget, even when they are no longer visible.

What does the poem imply?

The line "Out of sight, out of mind, my brother says" implies that the speaker's brother believes that memories will fade away once they are no longer physically present. However, the following line, "But only a part of me believes this is true," suggests that the speaker does not entirely agree with this idea.

This development suggests that memories are complex and can persist long after the physical world has changed. Memories are not always easy to forget and may continue to influence our thoughts, emotions, and actions long after they were formed. Thus, the poem suggests that memories are an integral part of who we are and can continue to shape us even as time passes.

Which phrase from the passage uses hyperbole?

rusted gate hung crookedly
broken windows let in the bugs
faded paint had peeled off in strips
been there since the dinosaur era

Answers

Answer:

The answer is- been there since the dinosaur era

Explanation:

A hyperbole is a over exaggeration, so the answer is D because it obviously hasn't been there since the dinosaurs.

The sentence from the passage which uses a hyperbole is option D "been there since the dinosaur era."

What is a hyperbole?

A hyperbole is a figure of speech that uses exaggeration to convey an idea or feeling. For example, when a mother tells her son she has called him a thousand times, she is using a hyperbole. By exaggerating the number of times she has called him, she emphasizes the idea that she was worried about him.

We have a hyperbole in option D "been there since the dinosaur era," which exaggerates the period of time over which the building has existed. There were obviously no buildings back in the "dinosaur era," but the purpose is to indicate that the building is very old.

You will start by researching various laws and public policies that pertain to families. You can really take this research in any direction that you like, while keeping in mind that the ultimate goal will be to write five short scenarios and connecting each one to a different family law or policy. For example, you could write a scenario that involves a parent who is intentionally hurting their child and connect this scenario to a child abuse law.

Answers

Child Custody Dispute: John and Sarah battle for custody; family court decides based on the children's best interests. Maternity Leave: Emily takes time off work to care for her newborn, supported by family policies. Domestic Violence: Lisa obtains a protection order to escape abuse. Adoption: David and Michael navigate adoption laws to start a family. Surrogacy: Sarah and Tom engage in a legal surrogacy arrangement with assistance from reproductive laws.

Scenario 1: Child Custody Dispute - Connecting to Family Law

John and Sarah are going through a divorce and are locked in a custody battle over their two children. They both believe that they are the more suitable parent to have primary custody. In order to resolve this dispute, they approach the family court, which considers the best interests of the children as the paramount factor. The court evaluates various factors, such as the parents' ability to provide a stable environment, their willingness to cooperate, and the children's preferences (depending on their age). Based on the evidence and arguments presented, the court ultimately decides to grant joint custody to both parents, ensuring that the children maintain a healthy relationship with both of them.

Scenario 2: Maternity Leave - Connecting to Family Policy

Emily is a working mother who has just given birth to her first child. She wants to take some time off from work to bond with and care for her newborn. Thanks to family policies implemented in her country, she is entitled to maternity leave, which allows her to take several weeks off work while still receiving a portion of her salary. This policy recognizes the importance of supporting new parents during the crucial early stages of a child's life, enabling Emily to balance her work and family responsibilities.

Scenario 3: Domestic Violence - Connecting to Protection Orders

Lisa has been suffering from domestic violence at the hands of her abusive partner, Mark. She decides to seek legal protection to ensure her safety and that of her children. She reaches out to a local domestic violence shelter, where she is provided with information and support. The shelter helps her obtain a protection order, also known as a restraining order, which prohibits Mark from contacting or approaching Lisa and her children. This legal measure is essential in safeguarding victims of domestic violence, giving them a sense of security and providing a legal recourse if the abuser violates the order.

Scenario 4: Adoption - Connecting to Adoption Laws

David and Michael, a same-sex couple, have always dreamt of starting a family. They explore the option of adoption and go through the adoption process, which involves extensive background checks, home visits, and interviews to ensure their suitability as parents. They work closely with an adoption agency that guides them through the legal requirements and supports them emotionally. With the help of adoption laws that promote equal opportunities for all prospective parents, David and Michael are able to welcome a child into their loving home

Scenario 5: Surrogacy - Connecting to Assisted Reproduction Laws

Sarah and Tom have been struggling with infertility and decide to pursue surrogacy to have a child of their own. They engage in a surrogacy arrangement with a willing surrogate mother, and together, they navigate the legal complexities associated with assisted reproduction. With the help of specific laws governing surrogacy, they establish a legally binding contract that outlines the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved, ensuring a smooth and secure process for everyone.
