In this unit, you read William Wordsworth’s poems “Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey”, “The World Is Too Much with Us”, and “I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud". How are these poems representative of the Romantic Period?

Answers

Answer: The answer is below.

Explanation:

William Wordsworth's poems, "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey", "The World Is Too Much with Us", and "I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud" are representative of the Romantic Period for several reasons.

Firstly, the Romantic Period emphasized the importance of individualism, and Wordsworth's poems often focus on the individual's experiences and emotions. In "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," for example, Wordsworth reflects on the power of nature to inspire feelings of joy and contentment, while "I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud" celebrates the beauty of nature and its ability to uplift the spirits.

Secondly, the Romantic Period was marked by a renewed interest in nature, and Wordsworth's poems often celebrate the natural world. "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey" describes the beauty of the River Wye and the surrounding landscape, while "I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud" celebrates the beauty of the daffodils.

Thirdly, the Romantic Period was characterized by an interest in the supernatural and the mystical, and Wordsworth's poems often contain elements of the supernatural or mysterious. For example, "The World Is Too Much with Us" reflects on the spiritual emptiness of modern life and the desire to reconnect with the mysteries of nature.

In summary, Wordsworth's poems are representative of the Romantic Period because they celebrate individualism, the beauty of nature, and the mysterious and supernatural, which are all key themes of the movement.

(I took this from ahsan57900)

1. The governments and economies of foreign nations greatly influenced the United States of America because the products produced by foreign nations compete with the American products in the market. This competition causes negative effects on the economy of United States when more products of foreign countries are sold as compared to American products due to lower prices of foreign nations products.

2. Big challenges are created by nontraditional economies, natural disasters, and emerging democracies on the United States government because these factors lowers the production and sale of American products in the market that affected the economy.

Read the speech "Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True" and consider the advertisement "The Opportunity of a Lifetime." Then, answer the question.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

The Nez Percé people seek to preserve their valued cultural traditions. The Nez Percé people hope to reduce conflict between the Indians. The Nez Percé people adhere strongly to human values and morals. The Nez Percé people want the new settlers to better understand them.

Answers

Answer:

The central idea of the speech that is most supported by this excerpt is:

D. The Nez Percé people want the new settlers to better understand them.

Explanation:

Firstly, the speaker has addressed how some people in the audience misunderstand Native Americans:

Some of you think an Indian is like a wild animal.

Of course, a human being is not like a wild animal. And that is what the speaker intends to show. In order to do so, he/she will tell the audience about the Nez Percé people:

I will tell you all about our people, and then you can judge whether an Indian is a man or not.

The purpose is to have the audience, the new settlers, better understand Native Americans. By telling them about his/her people, the speaker expects them to see Native Americans from a different, maybe kinder, more empathetic and humane perspective. As we know, throughout history, several colonizing nations used civilization as an excuse to subjugate peoples around the world. They would claim the peoples they were killing, enslaving and forcing their culture onto needed to be civilized, even if forcefully.

Based on the information given, the central idea of the speech that is most supported by this excerpt is D. The Nez Percé people want the new settlers to better understand them.

The central idea simply means the theme of the passage or story. It's simply what the author wants the readers to know about the story.

From the story, it can be seen that the speaker has addressed how some people misunderstood Native Americans. The theme was that the Nez Percé people want the new settlers to understand them.

The story teaches us that in politics, sometimes those who seek equality are not ready to be equal.

What is the explanation for the above response?

The novel itself starts with an allegory of the events that led to the Russian Revolution in the year 1917. This was the early years  of the soviet Union. It looks at the theme of power, corruption, and the side effects of totalittarianism.

In the Animal Farm they strove to be free and to be equal. But eventually found themselves in a political situation where it was said that "Some animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".

This highights the need for critical thinking and independent thought but also the fact that the code upon which society is designed if inherently flawed and that freedom is an ideal we can only strive for no matter how homogenous the community may seem.

Startled by their appearance the girl tried to climb a tree, in order to hide herself in its branches, but her frame was bowed with sorrow and her weak limbs refused to aid her. In this case, Sergey settled for classes that fit his schedule, rather than taking the time to search for classes that aligned with his interests and goals.

Satisficing can be a useful strategy in situations where time and resources are limited, but it can also lead to suboptimal outcomes and missed opportunities. By settling for less than the best option, individuals may miss out on opportunities for growth and development, or make decisions that ultimately prove to be unsatisfactory.

From "The Tyranny of Things" by Elizabeth Morris

Once upon a time, when I was very tired, I chanced to go away to a little house by the sea. "It is empty," they said, "but you can easily furnish it." Empty! Yes, thank Heaven! Furnish it? Heaven forbid! Its floors were bare, its walls were bare, its tables there were only two in the house were bare. There was nothing in the closets but books; nothing in the bureau drawers but the smell of clean, fresh wood; nothing in the kitchen but an oil stove, and a few a very few dishes; nothing in the attic but rafters and sunshine, and a view of the sea. After I had been there an hour there descended upon me a great peace, a sense of freedom, of in finite leisure. In the twilight I sat before the flickering embers of the open fire, and looked out through the open door to the sea, and asked myself, "Why?" Then the answer came: I was emancipated from things. There was nothing in the house to demand care, to claim attention, to cumber my consciousness with its insistent, unchanging companionship. There was nothing but a shelter, and outside, the fields and marshes, the shore and the sea. These did not have to be taken down and put up and arranged and dusted and cared for. They were not things at all, they were powers, presences.

And so I rested. While the spell was still unbroken, I came away. For broken it would have been, I know, had I not fled first. Even in this refuge the enemy would have pursued me, found me out, encompassed me.

If we could but free ourselves once for all, how simple life might become! One of my friends, who, with six young children and only one servant, keeps a spotless house and a soul serene, told me once how she did it. "My dear, once a month I give away every single thing in the house that we do not imperatively need. It sounds wasteful, but I don’t believe it really is. Sometimes Jeremiah mourns over missing old clothes, or back numbers of the magazines, but I tell him if he doesn’t want to be mated to a gibbering maniac he will let me do as I like."

The old monks knew all this very well. One wonders sometimes how they got their power; but go up to Fiesole, and sit a while in one of those little, bare, white-walled cells, and you will begin to understand. If there were any spiritual force in one, it would have to come out there.

I have not their courage, and I win no such freedom. I allow myself to be overwhelmed by the invading host of things, making fitful resistance, but without any real steadiness of purpose. Yet never do I wholly give up the struggle, and in my heart I cherish an ideal, remotely typified by that empty little house beside the sea.

b
The beauty of things
c
The passion for things
d

Answers

The beauty of things is the central idea is not discussed in Morris’s essay. Hence, option B is correct.

What is the concept of the passage?

The Tyranny of Things by Elizabeth Morris describes how the speaker believes that common objects have turned into unneeded clutter in our lives. She discusses how, as social creatures, we love to store things—even ones that aren't actually necessary. She describes how objects have accumulated in our life, "obstructing" our open spaces and reducing our ability to see the outer world.

She describes how she finds comfort in the emptiness of space in the excerpt provided. She responded when somebody suggested she fill the vacant place "Empty! Yes, praise God! Decorate it? God forbid!" Instead, she appreciates how "uncluttered" the house is, how it gave her "a sensation of freedom, of endless leisure," and how it is empty.

Thus, option B is correct.
